Chaps!

First post, so please be kind.

I have a 2005 w211 e220 cdi.

I've seen on various 'what oil/parts' look-up tools and indeed the v5 doc that it should have an OM646.961 engine.

However when I go to check the oil level in the onboard computer (dipstick-less model) it lists OM611 DE22LA as the engine type. (The v5 and 'puter vins match.)

Has the engine been replaced? Or is this just cos the 646 is a variant of the 611?

Many thanks in advance for any light that the honourable members might be able to throw on this.

I think it’s easy to tell them apart,646 has round air filter, someone can correct me if I‘m wrong...

Thanks Ivan! Is this a round filter for a 611, though?

https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/... (W~S211)/E 200 CDI ( (W211)) OM 611 (T72992)

Interestingly the mann catalogue makes it look like there was an e200 with a 611 engine (and one with a 646) but that all of the e220 variants had 646s.

The car's done 320,000 miles and been through 9 owners at least a couple of which were cabbies, so it seems likely to have had a new engine?

I found this : "The OM646 (DE 22 LA) is a modified OM611 2003-2008 and was in the car, the C-, CLK-and E-Class"
Can you find the engine number on the block ?

Thanks, Alec! It's wet and dark out but I'll lift the bonnet and report back in the morning.

Some more evidence: the puter and v5 gave the same vin. Vindecoderz say 646 for this vin.

it is known error that instrument cluster may be stating wrong engine type. Why, IDK... I can't see why someone would change OM646 to OM611, fuel system is different, turbo and EGR are controlled totally different etc... huge work should be done for no benefit...

Thanks Mersum1es!

This was good enough for me bit I did double check and sure enough 646 (and a bunch of other stuff) stamped on the engine block.

Thanks all!

Hi all. I own a c class w203 220cdi 2005 model. When go in to menu in the cluster,it also shows that engine is om 611,but i know for sure that engine in the car is om 646. I tried look for info in google, but no luck.

Yuri84: I'd trust mersum1es above. If the vin, v5 and engine stamp say 646; it is a 646. It's a computer error. They're quite different engines so it's unlikely someone would have gone to all the hard work of swapping them out. If you were unscrupulously trying to bang a new engine in, you'd want to do the least work possible.

Hi. I think that it means DPF filter, which is part of your exhaust system. Filter might need replacing, which is costly. My car does not have dpf in it. Maybe other members can help you out here as i am sure that guys on this forum should know.
Sorry that cannot help you on this.
