Anyone got a definitive answer to my question?
I have recently bought a 2016 c200d BlueTEC with the 7 speed G-Tronic transmission and OM626 engine.
I searched the internet to check whether the engine is a Nissan/Renault/Mercedes collaboration or all Mercedes and I did find one post that states that the manual version is a collaboration but the automatic is all Mercedes built. According to the VIN it's Mercedes but I'm still a bit vague about it, any thoughts?

Afaik anything over 180 is mercedes . Ie 200,220,250, etc etc .

I thought OM626 was the Renault R9M engine, the OM654 was the MB engine.
Just found this on a search.....
No, the "OM626" is not a Renault engine, it is a Mercedes-Benz engine designation, specifically referring to a diesel engine often found in smaller Mercedes models, and while some variants of this engine are produced in collaboration with Renault, the engine itself is considered a Mercedes unit; meaning the "OM626 automatic gearbox" is not a Renault engine, but rather a Mercedes gearbox paired with a Mercedes OM626 engine.

It maybe is , I did read a small article about R engines and the collaboration of a few companies.

I believe the Nissan/Renault/Mercedes collaboration engines are ultimately finished at the Daimler factory to ensure it is finished to their spec so as to maintain their reliability and quality image.

Does it matter who makes it as long as it does the job and is reliable?

Bit like paying top price for a Dyson vac then you find out the motor in it is actually made by LG (which it is incidentally) tends you make you feel a bit cheated!!
But as you say if it works well then no problem.

Not remotely.

Motor vehicles share components from many sources, it saves costs and resources to share certain parts.

What defines a Mercedes or BMW or Audi?

Styling, driving characteristics, interiors? Certainly not one component which, in this case, will have almost certainly been modified by Mercedes

Point taken.

I guess at one time we could look to a brand name and know their attention to quality of manufacture and reliability would be excellent such as BMW or Mercedes and that defined the brand, but as you state costing is a big part of manufacturing now and if you can take a basic Renault engine then let Nissan add some parts and finally let Mercedes tweak it to their standards it should be a good engine, hopefully!

The 1.5 diesel in the Juke seems to do ok. I'm doing 70 and they whizz past me . Alot of it is to do with badge snobbery.
