I got the dreaded oil cooler seal leak, luckily it was not my daily driver so I could take my time. Also it wasn't a Merc but a 2008 Jeep Cherokee with the OM642, but I figured I would come to the experts. I was very budget conscious on the job, and bought an oil cooler from Amazon for about $50. Replaced with new purple seals, buttoned her up and now started leaking coolant like Niagara Falls. Yes I blame the $50 oil cooler and ordered complete new set of parts (cooler, seals, gaskets, bolts etc). I got the cooler out and there's white residue everywhere, does anyone know what specifically causes this? (pics attached)
I should note that when I drained the oil and coolant I didn't notice any mixing of oil and coolant, but that's what I'm guessing is all over the cooler? Or maybe I got a bonus mystery fluid/material in the $50 oil cooler?
Thanks

There are some things that I would take a chance on buying cheap if the saving was big but they would have to be non safety related, failure not to have any consequence on anything else and be easy to replace if it did not work. The oil cooler on the om642 would fail the last criteria and therefore I would spend the extra and buy genuine.
Sorry it does not answer your question.
Did you check the oil cooler price at the MB and Jeep dealers? They're not too expensive - it's all the other bits and pieces that you need to clean up and refurb whilst you have it apart that make it an expensive job.
