took the grandkids to the safari park today car was fine going and coming back but while we were in the park the temp went up to 100+ it normally sits at 80+ can anyone tell me how to check the fan please car is a 97 c200

If 80 is the norm I don't think there is cause for worry. On a warm day moving slowly (driving in the park) 100 does not sound bad, however, some may think otherwise.

the temp started to creep past 100 it was nearly in the red

Did the fans cut in ?

If not , check the thermostat.

^+1 engine temperature sensor controls fan,so worth a check too.

according to the haynes manual its not electrical its just a straight viscous fan

in That case, ignore what I have said, must be thermostat,or fan then, sorry to mislead you
I was thinking later 202's. I take it you have no transfer of oil to coolant or vice versa?

no everythings fine it sits lovely between 80/90 until im in slow traffic

In my old W202 C200,it started overheating when stuck in traffic, turned out to be the maf, replaced it & all was fine again.

If it's pre facelift it won't have one.

You need to replace the viscous coupling. I had to replace the one on my car as the temp would creep right up just like yours. With the new coupling in place it never reaches 100 anymore.

Could you clarify where you say 100c is? as nearly in the Red is almost 120c, around 100c is ok in slow moving traffic for extended periods.
