R63 anyone?

Nice! Only 6 registered on the road in the UK at the moment.

One can always be found parked round the corner from Paddington station.

From Mercedes Enthusiast October 2014: Performance Special
excerpt from an interview with AMG Chief Tobias Moers

Q How do arrive at the decision to turn a basic Mercedes-Benz model into a fire breathing AMG?

A This is a process that involves whether the base car is compatible with the AMG DNA in the first place. Then the proposed AMG model has to be right for its segment and perfectly represent our values. A case in point of a clear mistake was the R63 AMG [manufactured in 2006], which would never have passed muster today.
Thus while the GLA45 AMG woks very well we stayed away from the GLK although with Porsche Macan leading the compact sporty SUV segment in driving dynamics, we will now look very closely at the potential in the next GLK

Like the A Class for example?

The only issue with the R Class in general and R63 in particular was that they didn't sell very well in the UK.

I'd certainly consider an R63 if I was in the market for a high performance estate and needed 4WD. A bit more exclusive than the S and RS Audis you see all over the place.

I'm struggling to avoid the buy it now button!!:D

Me too; that has serious PRESENCE. Quick, somebody, hit me with the sensible stick...

Please God, I'll wake up in the morning and realise I'd be daft to buy it. All the same...

I didn't know they even made an R63!

That is a real sleeper! Wouldn't like to be the mechanic doing any work on that engine...it's sooo tight in there. :)

Yep loose the badges modify the exhaust so didn't have spaghetti junction hanging out the back end and that would be a very cool school run sleeper lol

Nice people carrier and getting sort after I imagine.
I believe there was one for sale a few months ago @ Carlians, a car dealer between Guildford and Leatherhead, despite the distance it might be the same one?

Matt

Was always a bit of an oddball motor aimed at no one in particular but there's something strangely alluring about an R63, probably the rarity.

I've never understood "sleepers"

99% of the time everyone thinks you've got a slow car and nobody gives a damn anyway, and then 1% of the time you get to race away from the lights and surprise some guy in his porsche, who's got a similarly fast car that looks fast 100% of the time... :dk:

I also don't get the reverse situation, where C180 CDIs get dressed up as C63s... Same logic applies, those who don't know what AMG means don't care, and those who do know, will know you're a fake, and worse still, you can't even outdrag a Fiesta S!

I think that's the fun with one of these,as an earlier poster said remove the badges and make the exhausts less prominent and you don't have to advertise the fact that the car would leave most standing

You're completely missing the point; AMG's were originally "sleepers" so there will always be a thirst for them, it's only been the 2007+ Mercedes AMG's that have been more shouty.

I haven't missed the point. I'm not talking about AMG, or the Mercedes world. Sleepers exist far wider and beyond than this. I don't get the sleeper logic at all.

I've known Kas with 350BHP cosworth engines in, etc, and all sorts of old cars which look unassuming, but hugely powerful engines, all total sleepers, and I've never understood why you'd want a car that is faster than it looks. That's the crux of my point.

I wouldn't want a car that looks faster than it is, I've seen cars who's bodywork is writing cheques the engine can't cash, and vice versa. I just don't get it.

Is it worth it? I can leave most cars behind too, and actually I do, without even intending to set off fast, just a gentle set off for me, leaves the puntos, fiestas, and meganes back at the lights. I've not even hit 2000 rpm.

I wouldn't want to look ordinary most of the time, for the odd occasion where you get to show you're better than most...

As I said, I don't get it, it's not lack of thinking it through, I've got a very good friend who's nigh on 80, who's been a racing driver, owned a garage, alsorts, and he's into that too, but I just can't align with it. Soz! :)

That's the beauty of life, folks have differing views, it would be very dull otherwise

Hello,

so I happened to find this on Pistonheads Used 2006 Mercedes-Benz AMG R63L AMG for sale in Cheshire | Pistonheads and I seemingly missed the eBay listing. I've secured it with a small deposit until I'm back in the UK and can get myself onto the train and take a close look next week.

I've found a few posts from people who have owned one before and have emailed or pm'd them to see how they've gotten on with the car.

Meanwhile, I wondered if anyone else had any advice on it?

I have a B5 RS4 at the moment, but I have another kid on the way and I can't fit 3 kids seats on the rear bench of the RS4. I looked at the V10 M5 and it's the same problem - only two isofix seats.

This R63 seems to tick all the boxes - height adjustable 4wd for trips to the countryside, 6 seemingly real seats with 4 isofix points and a few more hps than my RS4. Agreed it's not pretty, but who cares from the inside... ;)

My only concern is the history for this one (have yet to get from MB) and maintenance costs which seemingly vary between little and absurd depending on what happens. The RS4 has cost me about £7k in the last 2 years, but then again I got a lot of preventative maintenance done as I was planning to keep it.

I have a feeling that this is the same car that was listed for sale in this thread 1 year ago : http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/general-discussion/137756-r63.html, but the seller does have a genuine reason for sale.

Any thoughts / advice / suggestions on members who I can contact for their own experiences?

Thanks, Tom.

Tom, If you haven't already done so, try asking same in General Discussion - you might get more response.
