Red warning light, Stop Vehicle. See owner’s manual

Hi,

New member so can only post in this section.

Can anyone help with the following, please?

A red warning light keeps appearing on my instrument cluster on my W212 2015 e220. Please see attached image below.

It states in large letters underneath a battery sign, STOP vehicle. See owner’s manual.

I’ve taken it to a garage and a MB specialist. Both have claimed to have fixed the issue but the warning keeps appearing.

What does your handbook say?
What error codes were read by the MB specialist? They did put the car on STAR?
Do you continue driving it? How does the car behave when the message comes on?

Take it back to the garage, they haven't fixed the issue.

Tell them to get it on a diagnosistic machine. It will be an issue with the alternator or battery system.

Clearly If you paid for the vehicle to be repaired and it hasn’t been, you need reimbursement and a garage who actually know what they’re doing. Sorry I can’t help further.

The manual does not refer to that specific message.

The garage said it was to do with the auxiliary battery in the rear and a loose wire. Was okay for 2 days then appeared again.

The diagnostic machine didn’t bring up a fault code.

Just wondered if anyone had seen that message before and knew what was causing it.

That's surprising, if the car puts up a red warning message there must surely be a fault somewhere. Was the diagnosis machine generic or MB STAR?

Mercedes specialist garage staffed by ex-MB mechanics. They did replace some wiring in the auxiliary battery which apparently sits in the rear but the issue clearly isn’t fixed.

Will take it back, just wanted an idea of how serious it is. Shame a 3-day weekend is now upon us.

The AUX battery should not cause a red stop the car warning. It would be an emissions related issue and could cause some odd effects (like cruise not working, basically forcing the owner to fix the issue).

Do you have a multimeter to check the battery voltage? You are not complaining about the car not starting because of a flat battery. The message does refer to alternator issues but if your batter does not run flat, it could be something else that confuses the car to believe that charging is not working. An incorrect type of alternator could cause this but sounds like the car has the original alternator. You would have mentioned if the issue appeared after a new alternator in the car.

Independent workshops often do not have a star diagnostics tool, may have a clone that would be fine in this case but if they have a generic tool, it may well fail to reveal the issue.

Thanks so much for taking the time to get back to me with so much information.

Yes, the car, IMHO, doesn’t appear to behave any differently since the problem first started a few months back. The warning light is intermittent, and when illuminated doesn’t appear to affect the car.

Has been back to a local dealership I bought it from and then on to a MB-specialist after it reappeared.

Although she is 7 years old she has only 40k on the clock and had been fully serviced at MB and looking at the reports, nothing has been highlighted before.

Its telling you that the battery or one of them if you have two is faulty or the system is not charging. If the battery is good and the car is charging correctly then possibly the battery control module?

Hi - I know this is an old message but I’m wondering if you resolved your ‘Stop Engine - see owners manual’ issue as I’ve got exactly the same message coming up on my E220 BlueTec and your experience in this matter would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Andy K

A battery warning could indicate that either the battery or the charging system is malfunctioning.

Testing for this includes:

- Load test using a tester that discharges the battery with a (very) high current an at the same time
records the voltage drop. This will test the battery for capacity.

- Voltage under high load. That is: Car running at specified RPM while at the same time
having all consumers ON, AC, Head lights, Heated seats, etc. This will verify that the
charging system is working.

And: also testing the charging cycle during extended time. It is possible for a battery
to be able to successfully crank the engine while having one cell bad. An indication
for this is when a start/stop-"feature" does not work (based on own experience).

Has anyone ever got a refund from a garage for a repair that did not cure an issue!!!??? they always claim to have fixed a fault.....but there must be another!!!

If they haven’t fixed the problem how can they give you a bill.
Impossible for me to comment further as in my personal experience it’s never happened.

I think mostly that they think they have sorted it......and then a bit later the EML pops up again. Their argument is often that you are buying their time.....not the fix!!

My car is doing the same thing now battery has gone flat
