I wish to retrofit a reverse camera to my R Class, has anyone done this? I was wandering if the camera lead is fitted to all wiring harnesses which would save me a job of feeding the cable through.

Depending on its age and if its NTG4 then it should be the same process as on my 2011 W218:

You will need to enable the camera on the COMAND unit:

Either your Dealership can provide the hardware needed, or try COMAND.CO.UK (forum sponsors on here)

What version of NTG do you have , possibly 2.5 on a 2011 vehicle ?

Based on the NTG 2.5 :

If the R class had a RVC as an option then the software maybe already in your headunit , if not you may need to get the software installed. Similar story with the hardware (wiring) .

On my CLS i had to send the HU away to get the software updated and had to run wiring to the rear of the car and fit an aftermarket camera as the W219 was never optioned with a RVC at least in the UK. In total it cost around £200 plus a few days faffing around with wiring etc.

Hi, thanks it is NTG 2.5 and the camera function can be activated using a plugin on the obd which comes with the camera kits, I just wandered if the camera lead would be installed as part of the standard wiring harness as i really hate trying to run cables from one end to the other, I find removing trim on the Mercedes to be a painful experience as they tend to break before coming off.

I suspect your biggest problem will be the wiring from the tailgate area to the Comand unit - I had a reversing camera fitted to my S204 recently and only later noted that the grommet in the top of the roof where the tailgate closes onto (where the wiring goes through, to stop water ingress) is not as it should be and does not clip in and hold as it should.
