On cars with 'fly by wire' throttles, is there a way of revving the engine from under the bonnet?

I was checking my battery and alternator but had to hold the meter against the screen with a windscreen wiper to check the alternator and rev the engine with the pedal. Is there a better way?

Hi
Not sure if my 2003 W163 is same as yours but the throttle pedal is connected via a cable to the "fly by wire" bit under bonnet, you can rev engine from end of cable.
Of course, yours may not be the same

I don't think so. The throttle pedal goes to the ECU which opens the butterfly valve on the intake, increases injectors etc.

If you could prod some lever under the bonnet to let more air in, it wouldn't necessarily increase the fuelling etc to match. The ECU would be wondering what the hell is going on.

Yours cannot be the same as an ML270 then. I can rev the car from under the bonnet using the plate on top of the actuator, which is connected to the throttle cable, which is connected to the throttle pedal. Its only fly by wire from under the bonnet.
