A180 2013
Good afternoon 🙂

As the title says, I'm having an error pop up everytime I start the car (A180 2013). I've researched it and it says it can be various things..I've checked the wiring under the seat, it looks OK. There is also a couple of odd things going on since this has happened too which could help identify ..possibly?

So, the Eco mode Stop/Start doesn't work at all now. Just doesn't show on the dash or the light even illuminate on the button to activate it. Also, the driving seat doesn't seem to be aware I'm in it? No warning for not putting a seat belt on..just the illunated airbag warning light. So I can drive without strapping in with no warning...yet passengers get the warning if they aren't buckled in.

I know this will be narrowed down with a code reader, I dont have one currently. I'll look at getting one. But does anyone have any idea what this could possibly be before I ask professionally and probably get charged an arm and a leg to fix?!

Thank you

You have pretty much diagnosed the problem surely?

"Right front malfunction" (was there any more message?) and not getting the seat belt reminder points to a failed seat occupancy sensor
.

Stop /Start no longer working could be a failing battery or other parameters not being reached to allow Stop6/Start to function.

I don’t think there’s an occupancy sensor on the driver’s seat. On my B Class that message pointed to the seat belt buckle which also fits with the lack of warning when you drive off. The part number is embossed on it and it is common to a number of models. Readily available on eBay. As you know, best diagnosed with a code reader.

Can you post a photo of the instrument cluster displaying the error message?

Yep....thats exactly what I get for my faulty occupancy sensor.....but mine in passenger side.
Good news is they can't fail you on the MOT for it!

Your seat belt is the problem, probably the driver-side front seat belt buckle needs replacing.

So the warning when driving without your seat belt fastened is built in to the seat belt buckle?

Yes. My understanding is that the occupancy sensor’s purpose is to activate the airbag when someone is sitting in the passenger seat, the assumption is that there will always be someone in the driver’s seat when the vehicle is moving, so no sensor and that airbag is always active. Whether or not the seatbelt is plugged in is determined by the buckle.

Yes.

There's no need for am pccupancy sensor for the driver seat - because the default assumption is that it's always occupied.

Its only the seat belt buckle that brings up the alarm.

BTW, it's a common fault, and can happen on either side.

It's yet another perplexing MB issue that is a 'common fault' across a whole range of cars over the number of years, and inexplicably no one at MB thought that perhaps they should change their supplier

Ok....so why is it showing a pic of an airbag on his dash and not the usual seat belt image?
