I often see people on this forum with the bonnets near vertical to get better access for working on them. My car does not have this feature and so the bonnet does not go that high....which is a pain when trying to work at the back of the engine....like when I recently replaced my turbo.. Should it have the two stage bonnet struts?....or was it not a "thing" on a 212 PFL.

Is there a catch at the bottom of the hinge, maybe one side possibly both that needs to be moved to get full height?

On both my cars you release the bonnet and lift it to the lower height, then have to give it a decent shove to lift it to the near vertical position. No release catches involved, just BF&BI!!

My R231 is like that, double shove, but my previous R230 had a catch.

Will look.....but don't remember seeing one.

Tried that....no go.

The service position on the bonnet is one of the things I (and my scalp) really miss about my C Class.

My facelift has the catches on both hinges that have to be released.

It goes up further if i push it hard...but not vertical enough to lock into position....maybe the struts are after market and not quite long enough.

My 2011 W212 bonnet can go vertical, but you have to first open it to 45 degrees and then release catches and pull out the limiter arms on both hinges. It is a bit more convoluted than previous models, presumably because it was the first generation to have hinges that automatically pop up in a crash to create some cushioning space for pedestrians landing on the bonnet. The video linked to earlier in the thread was for a car that doesn't have this feature.

The limiter arms can be removed completely, if you want to, they just unclip from the hinge.
