Vaux Astra Semi auto & Merc E220
Hi. Thanks for looking. I have just bought my first Merc. Its a 1994 E220 auto.

I dont have the owners manual.

There is a swtich for sport mode or economy mode. Which is which. If i push the button to top, it covers the E and Shows the S at the bottoml. Which mode is this in.

Also vice versa. If the switch is at the bottom, it covers the S and Shows the E. Which mode am i in.

You are in the mode you can see, i.e. when in sport you can see S and when in economy you can see E.

Ec or Sport

thank you very much.

Appreciate that.

FYI: Unfortunately, S stands for Standard not Sport.

Not that I ever told my mates that :)

On other Mercs its W & S, winter and summer:o we seem to be having our summer now, so I guess it should be in S:rolleyes:

you should only use winter when the roads are icy/snowy anyway ;)

Mine's Comfort and Standard!

According to the hadbook, it's fine to drive in C all the time, but the C270CDi isn't exactly quick to pick up its skirts at the best of times, and C (starting in 2nd) just exaggerates that. I also found that if I did need to boot it (entering a roundabout for example) then it'll try to start in 2nd, then change down to 1st with an unseemly jolt.

The only time I use C is on cross-country runs on A roads, where it'll shift into top at just over 40, rather than nearer 50 in S mode, so it's more economical (hence the 'E' on earlier models).

Not 100% sure, but I think your right foot overrides the switch anyway:devil:

i have found a difference in fuel consumption ( being heavier in S mode ) i tend to leave in W mainly and on occasion use the S.

Mine has a snowflake for snow/ice driving.
Absolutely useless as it stops me spinning the wheels and sliding around.

Got W & S on mine, 'W' stands for sluggish, or (as pointed out earlier) always pull away in 2nd and lurch into 1st at the last available moment (if enough persuasion is given). 'S' indicates acceptable performance, but, under no circumstances change up before red lining.

On another note, in the snow 'S' means flash the 'ESP' lamp continuously without moving, 'W' means make the car 'drivable'. 'S' + ESP off = loads of fun
