Stalling C43

On my last few journeys whilst sitting in traffic (in D with foot on the brake), my car has stalled with no pre-warning. The engine is up to temperature and there is no unusual loading i.e. only me in the car.
When you slot it back into N it starts first time and away I go.
I have also noticed that on rare occasion that when I come to start the car after it’s been sitting for longer that 20 minutes I sometimes get a ‘dead key’. Dash lights come on, but the engine doesn’t crank. Trying this again she fires up like nothing has happened.
The car was serviced about 7,000 miles ago so I doubt it’s due another already.
Any suggestions?

Could be the crankshaft position sensor on its way out or rust on the flywheel that is hindering it from functioning properly.

Update - Once engine temperature reaches 80 degrees it stalls (thankfully only when sitting still) then won't start again until it cools slightly. It's really frustrating when you generate your own traffic jam!

As above that sounds like the crank position sensor.

With the dead key are you sure you are returning it fully to off before trying to start.

That's normal because the CAN has shut down.

Replace the crankshaft position sensor - Their intermittent behaviour when they are hot and packing up does not necessarily show when reading the codes. They always eventually pack up when hot and can be quite dangerous when they fail when you are in full flight, as losing the engine loses the power steering and you may get one shot at the brakes.

+1 for the crank position sensor - same thing happened to mine, and yes, very worrying when in full flight. Never showed up via the code reading either.

As far as i remember a faulty crank position sensor does not show up as a fault when/if codes are read....

Had codes read at my local Indy today and nothing showing up. The tech suggested the Crank Position Sensor so that's what i'm going with.
Nobody said running a 10 year old C43 was going to be cheap!

Thanks for your help and suggestions guys........again.
Until next time. ;)

I had to do this on mine. Fortunately its a fairly easy DIY job if you have a socket set with plenty of extensions.
