Sunroof slides but doesn’t tilt

Hello all,

My Mercedes e280 cdi estate has the sunroof option and I have been using it ever since I first got it (just sliding it back). Unbeknownst to me it also should tilt upwards.

Since trying this it wasn’t able to go up and seemed to cause all sorts of problems with the seals. Now it won’t fully close to the level of the roof.

Any thoughts on what this could be any how I can fix it. Do I just need to get a full new set of seals and does anyone know the part numbers and where I can get them?

Thanks

William

Have you had the sunroof safety recall letter from MB ? 750 000 cars were affected including my 2006 C class , they used the same 'cassette' type sunroof on many models.
If your car is on the list you could get it looked at FOC at any Mercedes dealership.

The recall was for a bonding issue . But worth a try. Call them with and give them your VIN

Yes, I did get the letter and checked the date on the sunroof and mine is too late to be affected. Thanks anyway

One of our children had a similar problem on their Audi6 years ago.
IIRC they looked up Google and found a procedure similar to windows where you
have go through a process to recalibrate the windows/roof.

So, search in Google and most likely you will get a link to this site that details what you need to
do to reset the sunroof.

BTW - I'm guessing you have global opening/closing? Even if you don't, look it up

Update:

Removed the sunroof fuse from panel in the boot and reinserted. Set key position to two and then tilted the sunroof holding the button down for longer than it needed. Then shut the sunroof. Tried all function and all works. Hopefully won’t have any more problems!

Reset by removing fuse then re-inserting it back to it's place.
Did it do the trick?
So far does your sunroof work without hiccups?
Have you done several opening-closing tests after?
What was the outcome?

Would this reset for sunroof by removing fuse be the same as unscrewing battery clamps for negative and positive when switching battery in the car?
Cutting power.

Yes this has worked perfectly for several full sunroof operations. Not sure about the battery terminal thing, but the fuse was very easy to find in the boot (it was the 9th up and 25amp). Very pleased with the outcome and use the tilt function almost everyday, sometimes with the heated seats on!!!

Sounds wonderful, great to hear.
Might have to test this on mine as sunroof only opens approx 30cm at the time then stops, need to press switch again, it opens another 30cm and stops all the way to fully open.
To close sunroof I have to tilt the switch back to fully closing and then sunroof tilts and stays open, otherwise it won't close?!
Don't know what's going on with temperamental sunroof?

The reset procedure seen in #5 photo with the manual.
Is this the same type of reset trick for both older and newer Mercedes cars fitted with standard steel or glass sunroof?
Not the panoramic sunroof cars.

I’d assume there would be something similar for newer and older cars. I’d check their handbooks which are available online.

I have lost my manual for w202 don't know if it's the same reset procedure?

Just checked the w202 manual and it doesn’t mention a reset procedure. I’d suggest getting it checked at its next service and they can lubricate it or replace any broken parts if necessary. Sorry not to be more help.

Thanks for looking. 👍

Hello Team.
Looking for the window locking mechanisms for the small sliding windows on the Viano 2006
