I have been watching the comments on the site as to which is the best engine for the E class. I agree with most of the comments and feel the CDI's are the way to go. I wanted an estate car and tried a 200K. I know the basic engine well as my wife has a 12 month old C180K and its works very well in this car. In the E class estate it just does not have the torque to make rapid and unruffled progress. The 270CDI is a good all rounder with a lovely off beat muffled sound and also a vibration through the brake pedal at idle. It's a now no longer made.
I have had very good results using diesel tuning boxes with several other cars I have owned, an was sure the 220CDI would respond by giving more MPH and MPG as the others had. So a month ago I bought a 4 month old E220 CDI Avangarde auto with all the toys but only the small 4 pot oil burner. I drove the 100 miles home and was very happy with my choice of refined 'Ocean liner' for cruising the motorways and dual carrigeways in.
Then I plugged in my power module from dieseltuner.co.uk and I have a car that will get to 60 in under 9secs and in my first 1000 miles has averaged 50mpg. I could have paid £3k extra for a bigger engine, but for a couple of hundred quid I have a car which is quite quick enough, has better mileage and has become the third Mercedes in the family. Happy? Not half!

Very interested to hear about the 'diesel tuner' , since increased mpg is important to us.

How do they work ?

Can they damage the engine ?

Will they invalidate mobolife or warranty ?

Why don't more people have them? They appear to provide to provide an instant added value benefit !!

How do they work ?

They increase fuel rail pressure

Maybe the engine, quite possibly the Cat and fuel pump.

Yes.

One also needs to inform ones insurance company and some wont insure a car with one fitted.
