CLK 230K W208 Coupe (1999)(Auto)
GF has an A Class 2002 2100cc (the Evo motorsport)

when cold the car is very hesitant, it requires a lot more gas or it will stall.

It seems to improve as the car gets warmer, but not to the point of it being normal.

any ideas?

thanks

It is very likely to be the MAS.

It's the sensor on the side of the airbox that measures the amount of air injested.

Unfortunately in the A class its incorporated in one unit with the engine ECU. This means its very expensive to replace but there is a company BBA Reman http://www.bba-reman.com/catalogue/DetailedProduct.aspx?DetailedProduct=1047 that reconditions them.[but see the remarks here]
the topic is dealt with in some detail here. Bert Rowe's-Mercedes-Benz 'A'-class info. Mass Air Flow/ECU problems and the alternative to purchasing a new unit costing £1200.00 + Fitting from Mercedes-Benz, Special discounts available to readers of this site on guaranteed repairs.

thanks... but

Lets hope it's not that...will have a check over the air filter before it goes to a garage (decent indie) tomorrow

Just had similar problem with an A140. Mas sent to BBA reman and returned for £225 + vat. Problem cured.

Where do you have to post the part to? Is it there kent office or an international office?

thanks

I would get it on a Star first to have a look at some values.

Ah - there are some bad comments about them drilling the ECU, and some "pot" type object that they insert.

Would ecu testing.com be better?

Mercedes common ECU failures

Having had a quick re-read of Lofty's comprehensive post on this it would appear that BBA Reman drill a hole in the outer casing of the unit. In addition as part of the repair procedure they hardwire a pot=potentiometer=variable resistance into the ECU circuit. This is presumably to calibrate it after repair and should be OK if done correctly. However if repaired well this should not be necessary. Bearing in mind Lofty's remarks about BBA Reman [ some folks may have been unlucky with their repairs?] I would be inclined to give ecutesting.com a try since they offer a 2 year warranty. I have no experience of them directly but I have a feeling some folks on here have had instrument clusters repaired by them?
p.s. as suggested you want to be sure the MAF/ECU is indeed the source of your problem by getting the codes checked
