Turbo Diesel whistle

Not a Merc I'm afraid, but a VW with the 1.9 Turbo Diesel engine (2005 car)

Having had a number of VW's with this engine and been driven in a fair few additonally, I know that you tend to get a bit a turbo whistle from them, but I've got a Touran which is making quite a lot of turbo whistle/whine especially at low revs

Any ideas what makes the turbo make this noise?

Technically it's if the impeller is unbalanced, but could also be if overspeeding due to the vane ring being jammed.

Is there a fix for either of these two issues which does not involve having to replace the turbo?

I would check the vane ring is free to move properly.

Never had any noticeable turbo whistle from our Audi A4 with the same engine (on about 135k miles now) :dk:

Popped into the local VAG specialist....without the car I should add, as I was in another and they reckon its as stated a lose or split charge pipe (common) or the bearings in the turbo which would be a bummer as the car has only done 54k.

Got it booked in early next week for them to have a look at.

More likely to be the pipe, I would think. Mechanically they are pretty robust.

Good luck!
