I there anyway to guage the health of your turbo. I pulled the plastic manifold off the front of mine over the W/E for a routine check, there is just perceptible sideways play but no perceptible end float and some light oil residue on the turbo blades on the internal casting on visual inspection. You cannot hear the turbo during normal operation and when the engine is shut down there is a very faint whirring sound from the turbo for about 10-15 secs as it slows down when listening close up. Are all these symptoms normal ?
The oil will be from the breather pipe before the turbo.
It doesn't sound like you have a problem, what makes you think you do have? Most diesel turbos go to the grave with the car.
Thanks for the response. No reason to think there is a problem, it was just a routine check and I wasn't sure whether the lateral play as tested from the compressor end was normal. The car has done about 89K and on a couple of occasions when booting the throttle really hard I have notice in the RVM a brief smoke cloud from the rear (not black) and wondered whether this was from the turbo. In 6K miles since the last oil change, the oil level has not changed so that seems OK to me.
