Hi There. I drive a 2004 facelift C class W203 220 CDI estate. (120K miles) I have recently been having odd symptoms with the auto box that especially in cold weather, it sounds like the gearbox slips (or goes into gear number one half !!) and it sometimes changes harshly with a bit of a jerk....until the car warms up. Once it actually disengaged gear by itself at traffic lights though the gear selector was still in D. I had the gearbox serviced by merc indy with new oil & filter last year and it seemed to have fixed it untill the cold weather hit and it started again.

I am a bit hard of hearing and my hearing aids are probably not the best at giving me the full range of sounds. I had the occasion to drive through Blackwall tunnel recently and the sound that bounced back at me through an open window made me aware that there was "whistling" from the engine compartment when accelerating. This morning I checked it out and yes, there is definitely a tweety pie in there somewhere. I guess a breather pipe somewhere is split and causing that noise.

My question is, could a split breather pipe in the engine compartment contribute to my gearbox problem which I can only describe as the gearbox getting "confused" ? Thanks for any tips or tricks in this direction !!
