Vaio niggles

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-TZ11MN running Vista Business - it generally runs fine and I'm very pleased with it. I'm also running AVG free 8 and Spybot S&D. Its not set up to network apart from wireless internet.

Generally it runs fine, but there are a couple of niggles which I'm thinking are probably user created...

- The bluetooth facility won't work, running diagnostics it seems to think its fine but I can't get it to work with the bluetooth wizard. It did work initially.

- The battery level meter has disappeared from the bottom rh corner taskbar, can't find how to get it back

- The fn key has stopped working so I can't seem to adjust things with it (volume, brightness etc..)

I'd like to take it back to its factory settings to see if I can undo the above, if I did a major system restore, it would presumably keep all my files but will require reinstallation of the software and umpteen windows updates.

Any thoughts?

Ade

Have you altered any network setting on your Vaio?
On the task bar there should be a little green icon "LAN" right click this to enable Bluetooth...? Have to admit the bluetooth on mine is not very good either

Is the Graphic Card Nvidia?
If so get the latest Sony driver, there are known issues with some graphic cards drivers not allowing the Fn key +/- brightness

Will have a look at the graphics card... no idea if it has a separate one or it is integral, its tiny.. the fn key used to work and I seem to have lost the use of the little buttons on the front which operate the dvd.. am on the trusty old toshiba now..

I've tried the usual routes re bluetooth, I'll try again and post what it does - there is no error message, it just won't fire up the bluetooth bit.. makes it easy to upload phone pics....

Are you exepting the automatic windows software updates?...maybe one of these is mucking up your system? or a hotfix?... worth searching the FAQ at Sony. some updates i have left of as i'm happy as my vaio is...i dont lt microsoft auto update.

Hi Ade B,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FE31Z and only use it connected to the mains (no battery fitted). The result is I have a battery level indicator which I'm not using and wondered if you were interested in it. I could post it to you once I can figure how to get it off the screen, or cut and paste it to an Email. For security reasons I would prefer to deliver it by hand although this would involve travel, ferry and hotel costs of roughly £976.24p plus VAT and £35 each way fuel duty.

Once your feeling of joy and excitment over this news has subsided enough for you to think straight again, could you recommend a substitute icon for the empty space my computer will have in the bottom RH corner.

Looking forward to your earliest favourable reply.

Humbly yours.

Great, thanks Oldcro

Now I will be able to see at a glance how much power is left in the battery before those important client presentations..

I am currently abroad, but will get my shipping agent to handle the transaction, I'll send you a cheque for £25,000 could you bank this and then once it clears pay the difference back to my agent to repay a gambling debt I owe him..

Regarding the substitute icon, I would recommend a St Cyril of Alexandria
or similar.

Thanks and regards,

Ade

Just wondered if you've recently installed Vista Service Pack 1?

My volume, battery and connection icons disappeared from the taskbar after SP1. As MicroSoft are providing free support for SP1 issues I gave them a phone and they sorted it out for me.

Possibly, I've 6 pcs, 3 on vista so I can't remember what's on which... Will have a look.
