Pressure Switch would be my 1st port of call tbh
The condenser (aluminium) on the W639 is prone to corrosion from road salt etc., leading to leaks and loss of refrigerant. Mine went at 9 years old - £280 all-in to have a decent replacement one (Behr) fitted at home by an aircon specialist.

The condenser can get punctured easily.
A simple pressure test would show if you've lost refrigerant, assuming the pressure sender is ok.
For interest I checked my pressure earlier, all good at 5.5 bar.
Best to check that say in the morning before the compressor has had chance to boost it as you may have a slow leak.
You would need a respectable diagnostics for that though.

I've checked my aircon pressure via iCarsoft whilst ignition in position 2, but car has been sat overnight, which is really important to get a comparable reading.
You can go into the Aircon settings and view values, including what the pressure sensor is telling you.
A different car (E350 W212), but my aircon pressure when at a reported 21 degrees aircon coolant temperature is 5.3 bar, so really close to m80's findings above.
I had it refilled last week due to low pressure and coronavirus non-use, so I'm keeping an eye on the pressure every week to see if it's going down. So far no pressure loss.

Yep mines the iCarsoft V2, it has purpose sometimes.

Well, at usually £300 for an OEM compressor (just the part), £600 for a genuine Merc refurbished, or £1000+ for a genuine new Merc part, plus degassing/regassing (£40+) and then labour to strip and refit, I'd say it's a bargain.
I'd also check that brand new seals are being fitted at the places the system is disconnected.
Also, the aircon guy will need to make an educated guess about how much PAG oil to add and of exactly which type. Normally you'd inspect the leaking hole in system to see if there are visible signs of oil escape, and drain whatever bits are removed to see how much oil comes out and factor that into your guesstimate.
At £300, are you sure it's not the condenser that's being replaced?

Doesn't seem bad at all tbh. I'm assuming it's not too bad a job on a Vito (I'm on my 5th Vito in 17 years) as Volvo quoted me £750 to replace the same on a C70 I had previously. I did the job myself & found out why they charge so much, the front end of the car has to come off lol. Looking at the Vito it looks like it just slides out the bottom, so 120 odd quid for a pattern condenser, the rest refrigerant & labour looks pretty good.
