Could any members give me an idea of a reasonable price for a decent W124 E220 Coupe, I got the following info on one from a dealer Edinburgh. They have highlighted, delamination on edges of rear screen, rust blister at badge and paintwork on wheel rims. I would appreciate any opinions on condition and price. The thing that bothers me the most is the rear screen, is this a bad one or par for the course ?

The only thing I would say is that it has been for sale with them for at least 9 months. I was in Edinburgh in January and nearly went to see it then, but decided against it for my own reasons. It's still for sale with the same photos and at the same price.

Draw from that whatever conclusion you wish.

For that price I would be hoping for a better car, is that unrealistic?

I don't think so, which is why I passed on it back in January, but I wouldn't claim to be an expert.

If it’s been on sale that long they might by now be willing to take a lower offer...?

I will have a look at it next time I am in Edinburgh and see how much lower they would go. But I have heard sorting that rear screen can be tricky.

No it's not unrealistic.

Even from the photos you can see the rust bubbles, the de-lamination, the scruffy wheels and the bonnet star that seems to disappear and reappear and you can be certain that other faults would soon be apparent if you were to inspect it in person.

It's nowhere near a £5k car which is why it hasn't sold.

Do you want one with some custom parts or are you more interested in a standard one. Will it be a long term fun car or a short term "I owned one of those once" commuter type of thing...?

Maybe try some of the Commercial people selling the really expensive ones because they tend to know or hear about the little bit not so right ones that they may have passed on - that may be of interest to you.
If you want to keep it for a while and work on it to maintain and maybe improve it then the cheapest way to go by far is to find the best condition one you can.

So, bangernomics run it till it dies badly having enjoyed it for what it was, or I'm going to have something pretty sharp for the longer term that I just may see a price increase on if I look after it...?

Helpful post thanks.
Standard car, other than perhaps a set of amg monoblocks.
Long term fun car, I work from home so no commuting, my current everyday vehicle is a 2003 hilux pickup, that will continue in that roll so the new car will be for pleasure only, over the last two years my average mileage was under 3000 miles. I would envisage that going up a bit as pleasure driving will be a new activity. I did have a tidy old Rover 75 but my wife stole it from me and put 50,000 miles on it, I don't get near it now.
I cannot justify a really expensive one, £5000 is my limit, would prefer it to be less, but also cannot afford a money pit, I have owned other classic cars, so well aware of the costs with vehicles that need lots of work, I am not bad with the spanners so quite happy to do my own servicing and replacing parts, however I do not have a garage or even a driveway, but fortunately live in a street where working on cars in the street is quite common, so major suspension work or engine/gearbox rebuild are not on.
Because the car will live on the street, all be it a fairly civilised one, there is no point in a gleaming car, a certain amount of body work tidying is fine, I would just do it a bit at a time, I quite happy to do much of this work my self (in the summer months).
I do not tend to loose much money on the vehicles I buy, so I would want to improve the car , for my own enjoyment , but also to hopefully see a price increase should I need or want to sell it.
From my limited knowledge of these cars it would seem I am looking for a car which is mechanically and structurally sound needing a reasonable amount of cosmetic work. Just need to find one.

Buying the one in best condition for the max budget then becomes the mission. Nothing more expensive than a cheap Merc - honestly! When you get it make sure your exterior drains are cleaned out, a search on here should find the MB doc for that.

I'd be going to have a look at that one, take it for a drive and see how it feels on the road.

No AC, will that be a problem? These cars are surpurb with all the windows down - if you have short hair! :):)

I live in the north east of Scotland, so AC is not often required. I will see if I can find someone nearby to check it out for me.
