Aside from the usual 124 issues is there anything else to be aware of before purchase?

I think the M119 looms suffer a bit with the heat/age etc in a W124.

Front wings are expensive (different to standard W124 items), as are the headlights.

Is it an import or one of the (rare!) UK supplied cars? Paperwork/history etc all pretty important I would think.

Brown staining on the passenger seat?

Make sure the timing chain has been replaced, the M119 can snap them without warning.

Really? Never heard of a 500e with a broken timing chain and I've seen loads. I suppose any timing chain can break without warning.

M119 is the best engine merc ever made IMO.

Wiring Loom No 1 thing to check and budget or haggle accordingly if not already done.

Suspension can take a hammering.

Does it run cleanly, ie no flat spots, misfires etc.....they can suffer from distributor caps and rotors and not particularly cheap to replace.

Bodywork.....wings....jacking points

PS; I've never heard of the timing chain being a weak spot either.

Service history.. 500's get some serious hammering from their owners, so as long as the car has been maintained mechanically, you should be fine. Last thing you want is to pick up the bill for the previous owners neglect.

Great USA forum with some very knowledgable members including some who work for the MB Classic Center in the USA.;)

Agreed on dist caps and rotor arms. Rough idle / cutting out is a symptom of this. Most will need doing at some point.

To be honest, they're almost consumable parts.

Don't forget to check the insulators that sit behind the rotor arm too - NLA from Mercedes but freely available as a Bosch part. They should be a relatively snug fit in the block to help keep some of the moisture out.

Did you get my email?
