I`m having a problem with my S124,it rev`s by itself when cold and sometimes it stalles when you slow or in the while you`re sitting on traffic
All the above happens up until it warms up,once above 80 is all good but is getting a bit to long for it to warm on this weather lol
I have to put it on neutral while on the traffic or at the lights

Has anyone experienced this before or can can anyone point me in the right direction

I got a feeling is the loom but I thought I`ll ask you guy`s before taking the loom out

Gut reaction would be that it would be the same cold or hot (with the exception of wiring to any cold start device) if it was the loom?

Just like to add,I did change the coils hoping it would but still the same

How old is the MAF?

Check for a vac leak.

Chack the inlet manifold for an air leak.

How old is the MAF?

The maf was replaced just before I got the car,few months back

Where would the vac leak be?Also what should happen if I unplug the maf?

Hi dash, I had very similar problems with mine and after weeks of investigation i traced it to a two pin connection underneath the battery. One or two of the wires come from the maf to this plug then to the ecu iirc. as soon as i touched the plug the wires snapped off from corrosion.I rejoined the wires and been sound since.Hope this helps.

Don't unplug the maf. It does not help at all.

The vac leak will be from any of the vacuum pipes in the engine bay.

Look at your loom too. OPen it up at the coil end as it passes into the main loom.

i had similar problem with sec w126, it was the air flow valve which sat between the 2 banks of the v8, the old w124 300 e it sat infront of the fuel distributor

Oh dear. I am about to price on up for another bloke. Do you want to see if I can get a deal?

I need a chassis number too!

How is the 36 conv?

Do these engines have a crank case ventilation valve or something similar?

When I had the 540i it exhibited the same behaviour (it didnt rev on its own though) and had a horrible idle, but had power everywhere else in the rev range. Turned out to be this CCV valve which sits at the back of the inlet manifold case, took me ALL bloody weekend with a HOWTO guide from the BM forum on removing the inlet manifold and replacing this thing.

Vacuum can't leak, it has nowhere to go to. Having got the pedantry over and done with:D Check for air leaks. Pretty much anywhere there is a hose connection. A leak affects the metering of the airflow meter so the engine won't return to idle properly.

It is always worth cleaning the throttle body if it hasn't been done for a while.

No Andy, had a look at the wires but looks like I might need a new loom

Oh dear, will probably have to do mine sooner or later, the other part of mine that caused similar problems was the maf wires where they lay on top of the engine. The car was running at the time and i touched the wires and it fried the ecu. I've replaced them temporarily for now. Hope you get sorted.
