W124 E220 Estate 1995
:dk:Hi; was hoping that someone could help me out here with advice on a strange whiring noise eminating from the front of the rocker cover area of my engine. It started about 2 days ago and has become louder since.

My vehichle is a W124 E220 1995 estate; if I remove the black plastic trim on the rocker cover area there is a circular fitting with an electrical connection; this would appear to sit at the end of the cam shaft. My attention is drawn to this area when listening hard.

Like I say it sounds as if it is a whiring noise which becomes higher in pitch if the revs inscrease: Other-wise the car drives well but worried that this is causing some sort of damage.

Hope this does not turn out to be too expensive as I have just about reached the point of giving up on the old girl: Spent too much.

That's the VVT unit which alters the cam timing

Diagnosing a noise via an Internet forum is probably not the best way to solve your problem. I'd take it to an expert

Thanks Nick and that is the trip being planned for tomorrow, but you never know what some of the switched on cookies can come up with on here, espcially if you can't wait and are impatient like me!

Could just be a pulley or water pump bearing.
