C CLASS W204
Hi all just purchased a c180 cgi 1.8 Auto, 2010 with 78k miles, and i like the car, but find the gearbox annoying. It's quite slow to respond and jerky. It goes in to a high gear too early, which bogs down the engine. Any suggestions welcome?

Is this a 5-gear gearbox, or 7-gear?

I had the W203 with the M271 Kompressor engine (yours is the M271 Turbo) and 5g autobox.

Yes there's an annoying 'delay before acceleration' which sadly is a characteristic of the box when coupled with the smaller petrol engines.

You can try updating the software on the TCU and ESM but I am not sure it will make much difference.

As for shifting up.... I found that the car would only behave normally when the transmission was in 'S' (Sport) mode. 'C' mode (called 'E' on later cars) was useless.

Also... check tbe history to see that the transmission was serviced. It will need to have the ATF and filter changed every 37-40k miles or 4 years, whichever comes first.

Thanks Mark, got no evidence of transmission fluid being changed. Could that make a difference to the gearbox?

Difficult to say. It might, but then again the symptoms you described are also found on well-serviced boxes. On the balance of probabilities it will most likely improve matters but won't cure these symptoms completely. If you are getting the gearbox serviced, see if you can also get the software updated at the same time. It is not expensive, but requires the garage to have genuine STAR diagnostic computer.

Thank you for your detailed reply Mark. Really helpful. I do think the car drives better in S mode. However every time I start the car, it defaults back to C mode. Any way this can be defaulted to S mode?

Not that I know off... it was possible on my old W203, but not on my current W204.

There is a procedure for resetting the ECU values back to par so you can then train the systems (I.E. Engine/gearbox) into your style of driving. If you model is "Blue Efficency" then it will always start in C rather than S but it only one button press per start!

I must admit, I do put it in to S mode now and it's a bit better, but still hate the engine gearbox setup. I've had a 190e auto 1.8 and several w202's c180 and c280 autos which I loved, and those have much smoother gearboxes. The auto gearbox is often like a manual, you drop down to 5 miles an hours and pull away, and It just labours in 2nd gear, til it's about to die, then goes back in to 1st abruptly when you don't want it to!! Beginning to hate the car.

I had a 2011 C180 CGI for 6 years until recently. I nearly always drove mine in sport as just found it much more responsive and intuitive. I cant say I found the gearbox jerky but certainly there was a sweet spot when driving it that I learnt to get the best out of from the gearbox and engine via the throttle - it certainly required to be driven smoothly and progressively. The only time the gearbox jerked was on descents to a near stop and then accelerate again. I think my transmission fluid was done at some point and it was FMBSH - I'd suggest you get yours done or find out from MB if it has been done if it has Mercedes Service history.

There were some C180s I think that had 1.6 engine. I never quite worked out when these were released/why or how they were specced but check its a 1.8 not that I know if there was any power difference.

The 1.6 M271 engine in the C180K saloon was introduced with the Blue Efficiency version from 2008 - 2010 after which the C180 changed to CGI engine with a turbo. The confusing part is the CGI engine was initially a 1.8 which incidentally had worse emissions and economy figures than the 1.6 C180K it replaced. Not sure exactly when but I think after only 1 year the C180 CGI adopted the 1.6 capacity which brought improved emissions and economy compared to the 1.6 C180K.

On it's introduction in 2008 C180K, the 1.6 engine had the same 154 bhp and 170 ftlbs of torque as the 1.8 it replaced but significantly reduced emissions and improved economy. This was presumably achieved by turning the wick up on the kompressor and reducing frictional losses. Besides the smaller capacity, losses were reduced by removal of the internal balance shafts and chain drive.

There are also lower powered versions of the 1.6 but they were not used in the C180 saloon cars.

To add to the confusion, the M271 1.6L engine was replaced with the M274 1.6L engine... so the C-Class W203/W204 in the UK had the following 4-cyl petrol engines (in this order):

M111 2.0L Kompressor (1999-2003)

M271 1.8L Kompressor (2003-2008)

M271 1.8L Turbo (2008-2012)

M271 1.6L Turbo (2010-2012)

M274 1.6L Turbob (2013-2015)

The years are an approximation.
