on my my old w203 it used to display the gear eg D1 D3 ect... on my new 09 w204 it doesnt, it just says D... is there a way to get it to display the gear??

also while im here is there a way to retrofit paddles? cheers

All the auto's I have driven only ever showed D when in drive. If you change to manual mode it may display them then, nut I am sure in auto D, R, P or N.

nope it changes gear but doesn't display

If you use the tiptronic it will/should show what range of gears you've selected - so for instance D3 means the box will use gears 1-3 as appropriate - which is what my S204 does. However, it will never display exactly which gear you're currently driving in - unless you've held the lever to the left at very low speed and it's showing D1!

Having had, for many (20+) years, a Porsche 968 tiptronic where in manual mode the dashboard display showed exactly which of the 4 gears it was currently using, I miss that on my MB's. I seldom use the tip part of the transmisiion on either car - even with the paddle shift on the SLK - because it only shows the range selected not the actual gear you're using. It's annoying when, for example, you use the tip feature to go down a gear or 2 ready to overtake, and soon as you hit the loud pedal hard there's a slight delay before the kickdown kicks in to drop you another gear!

On an auto why would you want to know OP
Cause iv gone from a w203 c200 cdi to a w204 c180k blueefficiency.

To get anywhere near the same fuel efficiency around town I'm having to knock it up in to 5th and keep checking by knocking the selector to the right... as if you don't tell it too it will stay in 4th.
