Its taking approx 20 minutes plus for the engine to get to operating temp, in some instances I've noticed the temp drop instead of increasing

Is this normal? Or would this point to needing a new themostat?

Yes, looks like a new thermostat is due.

Assuming your car has the M271 engine, then you're in luck on the thermostat front (though not so much on the timing chain... but that's a different story). The thermostat on the M271 isn't expensive and easily accessible.

Apologies can the admin amend the subject title its a w204 not w205, cheers

After 20 mins of driving this is where the engine temp needle is sitting

Car has only done 50k i was thinking the weather maybe a factor but 20 mins to get to temp does seem excessive

Any guides as to how i can go about changing the thermostat? Would you recommend oem part?

The thermostat on my W203 M271 went at 50k miles. I bought an Wahler thermostat that was identical to the MB-branded one, and replaced it myself.

Fantastic, where did you purchase the thermostat from?

Would you know the MB part no?

It's worth double-checking the MB part number because the spec for your engine might be different to mine. If you post your VIN someone with access to EPC will be able to confirm it.

As far as I can see your thermostat is probably MB P/N A271 200 03 15, Wahler P/N 410389.103D, but this needs to be verified on EPC.

Cheers, can anyone kindly verify this on EPC?

Wahler is OEM for many makes of car after replacement on my other make of car the car got up to temperature within a few miles and the mot smoke opacity test more than halved .

Often sold under the BorgWarner name.

The M271 CGI Petrol thermostat is known to fail. A rubber gasket inside the unit gets dislocated, resulting in a coolant water leak past the blocking valve. Easy to see once the thermostat has been removed. Replacing it however requires moving a tube carrying steering soil (if I remember correctly - at least on my E250 CGI) and also removing the air inlet hose for the turbo. Unless patient and equipped with adequate muscle power, there is a risk of a stroke...

I've called my local MB they've quoted £116 for the part found a wahler one online for £76 just waiting on confirmation if its suitable for my car

Found this YouTube video which shows the thermostat replacement

Can i still drive the car?, as I have a 200 mile drive up north

Just did a test with the heater controls off, car started from cold and idling, not driven at all, it has taken 17 minutes to reach 80 degrees

As soon as i put the heaters max speed and max temp on the temp needle starts to drop

Would this still indicate that the thermostat is faulty? or is this normal?

Yes it does, not normal. You need a new thermostat.

For info, part Wahler P/N 410389.103D is suitable for my car, autodoc customer services have confirmed it is the correct part.

Thank you @markjay for providing the part no

its out of stock on autodoc but found a UK seller on eBay, waiting for a response to ensure they have it in stock before i order :)

One easy way to check if the thermostat is bad:

Start your car when the engine is at ambient temperature and is completely cold. Take a short drive. When you see the temperature meter needle move from bottom, stop somewhere safe and open the hood. The upper hose from the engine should be cold close to the radiator. If it is lukewarm - You need to replace the thermostat. I remember that the thermostat in this engine is partially electrically controlled. Check the connection on the top of it.
