The steel spare wheel is probably the smallest size that will fit . Mine is a 16” on my 2009 E320cdi Avantgarde .

Does the car have the Sports brake package (thicker, Cross drilled and larger diameter than standard) fitted?

If you so then I believe 17 inch is the minimum. Otherwise, as said, 16inch should fit but remember to check the offset. You will also need to have the correct wheel width (7.5 J, 8J etc for the width of tyre to be fitted.
