Hello,

I have a problem with my car engine in morning-cold start
white smoke constantly comes out, which disappears after a few minutes, this only happens in the morning, the first ignition. It started happening when the engine wanted to regenerate the dpf filter but I didn't turn it off in the program when I wiped it off the car. He tried to do the regeneration, I drove like that for 50km, after that the electrician connected the vehicle and cleared the errors, as well as the dpf that it doesn't exist (he was working on the ecu map as far as I know) the car started consuming oil at 3000-4000km 1L of oil I have to pay , until then the car did not use oil for 10,000 km when I did the service. Can someone help me? is the problem here with the engine or with the turbo?
 
Hi. I was always told that white smoke usually indicates unburned fuel for a diesel.
Maybe start with glow plugs?

It sounds like one or more glow plugs are not working.
This means that the unburnt fuel will cause the white smoke until the engine warms up.
When the engine is warm, the diesel engine will fire up immediately without the glow plugs.
Check the glow plugs and/or the glow-plug relay.

My e320i v6 was hard to start in the mornings and when it did eventually start there was a puff of white smoke. If the glow plugs are at fault you would get similar symptoms and the glow plug light stays on, but all the lights were normal.
I was advised by forum members that it could be the glow plug control relay. Even though my relay had been changed recently I bought an mb original part and changed.
Problem solved.
In the cold weather till your car warms up I believe you are going to see white vapour type smoke but it soon disappears.
Also glow plugs are easy enough to test using a basic multimeter. Hope this helps.
My advice is if you're buying a new relay git the original mb part I got mine off autodoc, it was a beru but didn't last 12 months.
 
Where's the oil going, or more importantly why?
 
Boxer is correct. The problem is the glow plug relay. The advice to get a genuine MB one is good advice. Nice simple job.
Search on this forum, many others have had the same problem.
 
The oil consumption is a different problem of course. Personally I would fix the glow plug relay and go from there. Burning oil would be blue smoke not white. Check for oil spillage in the undertray, you may have leaking oil cooler seals.

Start with the relay. It's much easier and cheaper and it's likely that the plugs themselves are fine. You can check them with a multimeter without removing them, give it a google.
 
Correct - your symptom of white smoke points to the relay which is really easy to change. If the plugs had failed you would most likely be getting the glow plug light on during running.

You have to be careful with that , it’s not unknown for an old glow plug to fail and damage the new (£100+) relay .

Surely if any of the plugs were at fault a continuity test would show up the fault or the glow plug light would be lighting up, or are you saying change both the glow plugs and the relay.

Yes that’s how I understand it to change the plugs and relay at the same time , at least that’s what I did .
If after changing plugs and relay I got a gp fail a year later , I would then just change the single plug.

I think in this case we don’t know how old all the glow plugs are and they are a consumable item .
 
Have you tried turning the ignition to position 2 to get the lights on dash up, watch the glow plug symbol go out, then start the car. If that still produces white smoke, try repeating it twice next time you cold start.

Ok fair enough, I just changed the relay cos my glow plugs weren't that old and I wasn't aware that glow plug failure would fry the relay.

This is the sort of thing I’d read in the past but I am just repeating things :rolleyes:

I had the exact same symptoms on my 211 years ago - the glow plugs were all good and had been previously changed with genuine MB plugs - then the symptoms of more difficult cold start, white smoke on initial start - changed the relay with a genuine MB part and all problems solved. From memory I think that the new relay was a different design to the original.
 
It is very uncommon for the actual plugs to fail. Just check them with a multimeter and assuming all is well, replace the relay.
