I have no idea what that button is for... but right up corner is webasto/ventilation (you can ventilate car remotely in summertime). Button led goes red when heating is on, yellow when timer is set, blue when ventilation is on. You should have timer menu in instrument cluster too (I cant recall for sure but I if W211 had driving only heater option)

That looks more like a microphone

Yes, the pic in the second button does sorta look like a microphone doesn't it? Can't imagine it is for that, but I would love to know!

a fan that blows cold air up your bum in the summer.

Here is a closer picture of the "other" button. It also has a "power on" light!

Are you in the U.K.?

Post #4 got this correct. It is the Aux heater on a US car. On a UK W211 the button is marked "Rest" on the same row as the heater control buttons.
If it was mentioned to start with that this wasn't a UK car it would have been spotted earlier.

First, I am only asking out of interest & curiosity. Please note, the pictures are of NON-North American/US vehicles. Aux heaters are NOT available as a factory or dealer installed option in the US. Also, US vehicles have the REST button on the HVAC controller as well.

Does anyone know of a UK/Euro w211 owners manual I can look at on-line?

For anyone who is interested, I have the answer to the question(s): As was already identified, the switch with the fan and "heat waves" is for the Aux Heater. The other switch with the "microphone" symbol is for those so equipped with Comand system, as best as I can figure.
