Advice needed, My 2012 B Class 180 CDI has had a transmission failure of some sort. No advanced warning no funny noises, then today as I approached a round about there was a stutter from the box, and a small mechanical sound as I then applied the power onto the roundabout transmission failed. Red warning on dashboard 'do not select gear, proceed to workshop'. Nasty mechanical clattering noise from engine bay. It has the DSG box with paddle shift, was in auto 'E' mode at the time. Any suggestions, as to possible causes and recommendation for good indy specialist I am on the south coast not far from either Bournmouth or Southampton. TIA

Try these:

http://www.pentanglemb.co.uk/

or

mysite

or

Mercedes Benz & Smart Specialists | Prestige Car Service | Horndean, Hampshire

Never used Pentangle but know several people that do and are very satisfied with the service.

Headlands garage (ask for Pete) I have been very happily using for my own cars for 9 years now and PCS carried out my last ATF change and are very highly regarded on the forum.

Unsure if any would repair the gearbox as they are specialised pieces of engineering but I am sure you will get good advice from all.

Many thanks for that, will give them a ring and see what they advise. Have a feeling this could be expensive.

Hopefully something relatively simple and not overly expensive!

Do report back and update the thread when you get a diagnosis etc.

Good luck.

From that you might deduce that any major problem would require a gearbox swap/rebuild via a specialist rebuilder or factory exchange unit?

interesting that. On Saturday I got the same warning on my Nov 2014 E350d AMG Line and took it in, only to be told that it was unsafe to drive and it could have failed at a junction or roundabout. Today I was told that the problem had been sorted by a software update but that if it reappeared, then I would need a new gearbox. I had specifically asked for the ATF level to be checked after reading posts on this forum, but they said that it had not been done as it is not due for another year! Needless to say, after 20 years of Mercedes ownership, I am looking at changing my car immediately. In the last 3 months the car has had 3 software updates to correct faults, one was when it lost the "Hold" function last month. I know that the older E class like mine is prone to electronic faults, but a new gearbox at barely after 4 years? SMH.
