What year did merc introduce dpfs into the merc cls 2005 to 2010?

Considering a cls but would prefer to have it without the troublesome dpf

Don't have a definitive answer but if you check the datacards, SA code 474 is with DPF

I believe in 2009 in became stadard with up to that year being an option 474 on the datacard. Easiest way to tell is by the soot on the tailpipes and bumper. Soot means no DPF, clean pipes mean DPF.

Was looking at the grand edition, which is a limited edition model which are fully loaded?, i believe these were the last of the run outs in 2009 so presume these would have the dpf

Anyone know what are the differences between a standard cls and the grand edition?

Erm not too much really. Two things I can name off the top of my head are the wheels and lights are bi-xenon as standard.
Other than that there is information on the wikipedia page about the grand edition.

All the Grand Editions have a DPF as they were on sale 2009 - 2010

The GE comes with Bi-xenons , Brabus chip (272hp) , NTG 2.5 Comand , i think parktronic and linguatronic are also standard.

Memory pack , HK audio were options.

I do a 2.5 mile trip to work then 2.5 miles home again and have had no issues with the DPF to date with 39k on the clock, the filter regens on a regular basis but i always take it for a run when the cycle starts to let it complete its process.

I always run it on V Power + diesel , if that would make a difference.

Euro 5
Implementation date (new approvals): 1 September 2009

Implementation date (all new registrations): 1 January 2011

The big news for Euro 5 was the introduction of particulate filters (DPFs) for diesel vehicles, along with lower limits across the board. For type approvals from September 2011 and new cars from January 2013, diesel vehicles were subject to a new limit on particulate numbers.

DPFs capture 99% of all particulate matter and are fitted to every new diesel car. Cars meeting Euro 5 standards emit the equivalent of one grain of sand per kilometre driven.

Euro 5 emissions standards (petrol)

CO: 1.0g/km

THC: 0.10g/km

NMHC: 0.068g/km

NOx: 0.06g/km

PM: 0.005g/km (direct injection only)

Euro 5 emissions standards (diesel)

CO: 0.50g/km

HC + NOx: 0.23g/km

NOx: 0.18g/km

PM: 0.005g/km

PN [#/km]: 6.0x10 ^11/km

V6 diesels tended to be fitted with DPF's earlier than the 4 cylinder cars as they were fitted to USA cars which had stricter diesel emsssions. If its Euro 5 it should have a DPF

As advised data of registration may not reflect date of manufacture so best to check data sheet and exhaust.

Anyway with other common problems on the diesel lump and the 7G tronic, a DPF would be the least of my worries.

Does the engine get to temp within the 2.5 miles that you do?

Depending on the time of year and how many of the 10 sets of lights i get stuck at but normally in the winter it gets to one bar below the halfway mark as i switch it off.

Over the last few months i have been going the long way home (3.5 miles) taking in blast along the motorway which does the temp getting to where it should be.

does the cls come standard with dipping mirrors when reversing? also is Airmatic vs non Airmatic is there a big difference?

Dipping mirrors only with memory pack. Airmatic has too many problems to recommend unless it’s a new car.

Inlet port shutter motor and glow plugs are common. Engines over 100k can suffer from timing chains stretching.
I ran a 59 plate C320 cdi for 7 years and took the mileage from 31k to 108k. Absolutely loved the engine, even though it’s in a detuned state compared to a GE CLS. I had virtually all the glow plugs go which were £50 a pop and the glow plug warming unit which was about £280. Also the inlet port shutter motor which was £325.
I was really pleased with the service that car gave me, although the indie that used to take care of it always said I was lucky that I didn’t get more things go wrong with it.

Although I take it thats just the coolant temperature? it’s unlikely the oil and gearbox temperature will be up to working temperature in that time. Especially in the winter.
