I purchased a set of alloy wheels and tyres from a well-known dealer. I discovered that the bolts that Had been supplied were only 20mm thread!!! How can I calculate the correct bolt length? It does not seem to be a problem on the front wheels. but the rear bolts rub.

The correct bolts to fit OEM Mercedes alloys for a W210 are -

M1215KU402. Shaft Length/mm: 40. Thread pitch: M12x1.5. Drive type: 17mm. Seat type: 12mm radius

What do the rear bolts rub on? Is it the parking brake shoes which would indicate the bolt is too long?

Your best bet is to put the correct bolt (as above) on the rear wheel bolt hole and measure how much is protruding out the back.
There should be 15 - 20mm maximum. Any longer and it will foul the parking brake.

I have a feeling you have either been supplied with the incorrect wheel bolts,or the alloys are not the correct fitment for your car.
They should have an ET (offset) 37 which should be stamped into the rear of the alloy.
