Hi all new to mercedes, today I went to check my oil and after closing the bonnet the dash is still telling me its open I've check and open/closed it a few times and it's still on the dash any idea how to fix and is it a common thing many thanks breene

Welcome to the Forum.

I would imagine that there is a fault in the switch (or switches) that determine that the bonnet is closed, on some cars this is part of the latch mechanism. Have a look for any electrical cables around there and see if they lead to a switch.

Also, have you tried searching on line to look up the position of the switch? There are often diagrams etc of these things available. 👍

I found its the one thing that needs slamming shut on a Mercedes...

My w212 is notorious for that. Needs a slam. I'd prefer not to so usually have to do that second time around (after the warning comes up after I'm driving it )

Sorry for the obvious question, but how do you shut your bonnet?

"Various opinions are available" but most MB owners talk about dropping it around 8 inches and then pressing down in the middle with your palms.

Lots of other makes don't need such a firm close. Maybe you've come from one of those?

At the very least, maybe pushing down with your palms might click the Stuttgart sucker into place.

My C class bonnet always needed to be dropped from a decent height; being mechanically sympathetic with it never worked, causing at least one side not to lock. I put it down to the plethora of very efficient underbonnet rubber seals.

Sorry for the late reply its not been popping up in my emails that I've had a response I had to move the wires under the latch both sides and yes slammed it a few times seemed to do the trick haha

Make sure that the bonnet catches on both sides are free and well-lubricated.
After winter, they tend sometimes to get the lube washed off and need a re-lube.

IIRC I adjusted the rubber stops (might not have been on my MB) down to make the bonnet sit slightly lower, to better trip the switch.
