mercedes 300e carat duchatelet
 hi guys this is my first day here so please be nice:eek:
i ve got my self a 1990 300e carat duchatelet.I bought this car from the guy next door who says he payed 47,000 thousand for it in 1990? Hes had the car from new and i ve always loved it! it looks lovely next to my dads old 535ise that he bought new in 1986 sorry to talk about that on this site:eek:
anyway the car has a full service history(132,000) and the only thing it starting to do is make a noise (whine) when sitting at 30 70 and 50 ,when you excelrate the noice stops and when you decelrate it stops, when i bought it the gear oil was a bit over filled so i have drained some out also replaced the diff oil, engine oil still looks clean ish so looks like is been looked after, is it the gear box or could it be anything else ????
if so dose anyone know if the 5 speed box fits on this car as shes running a solid 20 mpg and dodnt know if this would help having the extra gear
hope somone can help c ya :D

Rear wheel bearing?

Could be lots of things. First has the car got manual or automatic gearbox?? If automatic there is a definite method to measure the auto gearbox fluid. The level may read high if the engine is not running and the box has not been cycled thro all the selection positions. This fills up all the hydraulic lines and the level then drops. It will rise slightly again after driving for 5-10 miles since it expands when warm. Its all explained in the owners handbook. If its had a full service history I would be surprised if the oil level was wrong so it may have been a mistake to drain some out??. Manual gearboxes are normally checked via the level/filler plug on the side of the gearbox. Other possibilities are the propshaft U/J s or the centre bearing and its flexible mount.

Thanks to ya nick i'll keep that in mind
i had one go once but that noise did'nt stop at all it just got louder the faster you went ? mind you i way 17 at the time and didnt replace it for an ages ops! lol

Thanks grober the car is a auto i read the level on the stick but i better do as you say and check it the right way i did run it through the gears and check it but i didnt after a drive may be its a bit low? ill check it again the fluid was a bit dark so was gonna change it on the weekend, thanks for the other things too are they big jobs? and could somone whos done a bit of servicing and the odd job do them?

All work on the propshaft is difficult unless you have good visibility/elbow room/ access underneath. Everything is much easier if the car is up on a ramp. With care (issues of balance and alignment) you can renew the front and rear flexible couplings and the centre bearing/ housing yourself but if the centre UJ is gone you need to get an exchange unit or get it rebuilt at specialist propshaft engineering works.
here's a link to a HOW TO on a similar setup. http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/showthread.php?t=46449
