In this particular case, because I replaced it with another. The late CLK is a pretty car; the A207 E class Cabrio is drop-dead gorgeous, and in my favourite colour scheme too, so no contest. Simple.

Changing factory coding, whether to add or delete features, can certainly be done by third parties (for audio kit) with full STAR access. Whether that is the case for other hardware, or whether MB changed it for more recent cars than I have had, I don't know.

As others have said: just ask an MoT tester. If he/she says it will pass, get it tested there, not by MB. Simples... (Can the 'Technician' who advised you of the possible solution not do the re-coding required anyway? If he has a full Star subscription with Xentry, this should not be a problem.)
