It can be done from a Blackberry, I did mine at the weekend. Enable the "business card function" on the car and then send the contacts from the Blackberry using Menu>Options>Bluetooth>MB Bluetooth>Transfer Contacts
I am led to believe that you need the "cradle" (£262 from MB!!) to transfer...
Thanks guys. It appears that the problem was due to me being a first class numpty! :o Despite prodding every button on the roof console several times, it seems I didn't manage to work out that the lights in question are in fact, the map reading lights. Doh! My daughter worked it out in 3 seconds...

Yes the light is on ALL the time, even when driving during the day with no headlights. I've had a look through the menu's, but not found anything yet. I'll have another look.
