W204 C200 CDi Elegance
..... If I may folks. I picked up my new (to me) W204 C200 CDi Elegance of late 2008 vintage on Saturday and I have noticed a couple of things which I am not sure about. I can find nothing to confirm or deny suspicions in the handbook and searching the forum has so far rendered nothing, though that probably says more about my search technique than the forum content.

Anyhoo, enough waffle. When I start the car I get a message in the centre of the speedo from the on board computer "no rear seatbelts engaged" despite the fact that there is nobody/nothing in the rear seats. This doesn't happen every time but more often than not and disappears after a few seconds with no apparent adverse effects. Is this normal?

Also I have an LED light mounted in the bottom of the rear view mirror, which I suspect is "mood" lighting. I can see no way of turning this off. Is it possible? It is quite distracting at night.

Thanks in advance. :)

The rear seat belt message is normal, I get the same in mine. I've not noticed a LED light on, are you saying this is when you are driving? There is a comprehensive menu in the speedo, perhaps it's a setting in there.

I'd be interested to know what sort of mpg you get, as I fail to reach the MB figures, 40mpg per tankful being my usual, despite the trip computer saying otherwise.

Thanks for that artyman. Good to know the "error" message is nothing to worry about.

Yes the light is on ALL the time, even when driving during the day with no headlights. I've had a look through the menu's, but not found anything yet. I'll have another look.

I've only done about 50 miles so far, so have no idea what the fuel consumption is like. Pretty much everything so far since I reset the counters has been around town and the on board widget says about 37mpg. Have to say I'll be a happy bunny if that proves to be true. I'll will start using it a bit more towards the end of the month, so I'll get some useful figures then.
VW quoted 49mpg combined for my old Golf but I only ever got close to that if I pretended I was riving a hearse. Mostly motorway driving used to give me around 42 combined driven sensibly and around 37 driven like it was stolen so not a huge difference to be fair.

I have a facelift W204 and don't get the rear seatbelt warning at start up so not sure if this is a design issue that was changed with the revamp. As for the light in the rear view mirror I think the anti-dazzle mode which is normally 'on' can be overridden by flicking a switch on the underside of the mirror housing so wonder whether this might be the issue. I'll check mine and repost back unless someone else can give you the right information.

I have the facelift W204 and do get the warning:confused:

Thanks guys. It appears that the problem was due to me being a first class numpty! :o Despite prodding every button on the roof console several times, it seems I didn't manage to work out that the lights in question are in fact, the map reading lights. Doh! My daughter worked it out in 3 seconds flat.

That's a relief then, mind you sat nav saves using the map lights :D
