1985 S123 230TE 3 owner, 140k, £12k

1985 MERCEDES-BENZ W123 230TE ESTATE AUTO 2.3 PETROL 2 PREVIOUS OWNERS FSH | eBay

At 38 years, too old to be my estate cup of tea, but 19 Main dealer services and 3 independents caught my eye.

Must surely appeal to someone on here.

From the same person who had the brown C63 estate that disappeared within a day last week.

Classic insurance, and in one year and 11 months - tax exempt, MOT exempt and ULEZ exempt too!

Wiring that can turn to dust, rust in the strangest places, but “could” be a gem if it’s been maintained, garaged and lightly renovated.

I’d love it if I had the space for more, but I’d rather have a larger petrol mint S124, or an SEC or ….

I think to be fair it was later W124s that suffered from the bio-degradable wiring looms. As with any older MB rust would be the biggest worry

I see quite a lot of 20-30 something year old cars being sold ‘due to ULEZ’, so one that is going to be MOT exempt, tax exempt and ULEZ exempt does have some attractive benefits I would argue.

Say £1000 off the annual running costs, which would cover that wiring loom on the non-compliant/non-exempt petrol W124 meaning that for most people on that 123 it would just be the cost of insurance and some pragmatic maintenance - the vehicle will probably retain its value and no doubt appreciate a little in time

Understood. I'm just commenting on R107's and a friend who has had enormous problems with the loom on his 1980's car.

Agreed, the car could well hold value and repay gentle maintenance. It's lurvely, but caveat emptor.

from your comments I assume you have never owned a decent R107--or possibly any? the wiring loom is no problem, the cars were incredibly well made from decent steel and any rust would only appear in the obvious places for most peeps.

A friend bought an R107 two years ago and had horrendous problems with his wiring loom which was turning to dust in the hands of the MB specialist who was trying to get the thing to start reliably. I've had friends and neighbours over the last thirty years who've owned R107's but I've not owned one myself. At ten years old they were too expensive and usually clocked, I skipped the battleship built R129, and later my two R230's were faultless and more practical.

I did enjoy watching Bobby Ewing drive his R107.

I enthused about this 230TE, highlighting it to anyone on here who might be interested.

My point was "caveat emptor" when tempted to buy a forty year old Mercedes. One kept on the street and "lightly maintained" will not be the same as one kept garaged by a Professional Golfer's wife, maintained by a main dealer, and driven to the Golf Club once a week during the Summer.

Nothing specific to the R107, I'd say the same thing to someone contemplating an early 1980's 500SEC or a Grosser.
