Mercedes 500 SEL W126 1989 | eBay

The above has a sunroof problem which has resulted in water entering the cabin under the floormats etc etc. Also the seller by his own admission has never serviced the car. Avoid.

Mercedes 500 SEL - Rare Sample of a Classic Mercedes 1990 Limo - Iconic W126 | eBay

Seller says "This sample has been just resprayed and restored to shining original siver paint with perfect inside velour grey seats".
Well all I can say is it must have been the cheapest silver paint you could ever find. It was dull and lifeless. As for the velour seats being perfect I have never sat in a car where the seats literally sank. Not even that: of the 6 w126s that I've owned the rear seat had hardly been used and where almost mint. This one has a rear bench seat that was just as worn out as the front ones!

There was no tool roll with the spare which looked totally worn out. The boot carpet did have a lovely stain though. All of the tyres were cheap budget nonsense and when I looked at the date stamp on one it told me that it was 12 years old!? Makes you wonder how it ever passed its MOT??

One of the rear windows didn't go down and the rear blind had packed up. A rear reading light didn't work and when I prized the plastic covers off the 4 jacking points they'd all rusted despite his claim of a 4k+ respray. The 4 doors were also rusty underneath.

The radiator grille had a dent because he wanted to keep the car "original" and his service history were some meaningless printouts from MB that showed almost nothing had been done...

For a pair of aged gas-guzzlers with hefty mileages the prices seem extremely optimistic even before you consider the long lists of faults.

I sometimes peruse the w126 for sale ads, always quite fancied one as a weekend toy.

Like any car that age though I guess it’s hard to find a good one that’s been maintained properly and doesn’t have a bunch of hidden issues. Thanks for the heads up.

I've been using ebay to look out for a cls 55 for just over a year now. Almost bought one, but in person it wasn't in the condition of the ad... It's interesting seeing how the prices have fluctuated for the same cars a few months apart!
