I have a 2004 CLK500 with 140k miles, had it 4 months and runs great. Until last night it cut out twice whilst braking and at very low speed, in fact I might even have been stopped. So what happened as you can images a little panic and im not sure if the battery warning came on first then it stalled or stalled and then battery warning and visit workshop appears in red. Both times it restarted fine and message went away and no engine management light on and no codes in OBDII reader.

This morning i checked the battery volts via the dashboard (key in pos 1 and tapped reset 3 times) read UB =12.1v , this was cold start having been left over night, engine starts crisp voltage rises to 14.2v.

I dont think its the battery as the engine starts fine and no other electrical gremlins. it was as if the power was cut so im thinking bad battery connections, earth leads or voltage regulator on its way out.

Anyone an suggestions what to look at or had a similar problem?

Symptoms sound similar to a faulty Crank Position Sensor (CPS).

Had a good look round and found a slightly loose battery neg terminal. Took both pod and neg off and cleaned and secured. Been on a 10 mile drive and no issues. But then again it only did it twice in a 30 mile journey. So let's see what happens this week.

Fingers crossed you’ve found it.

Well I've gone a few weeks and no problems, so appears to have been the loose battery terminal. thanks for feedback.
