I am an infrequent contributor here but with the encouragement of @bolidemichael may become more of a regular. I hope you can help diagnose an issue with my new-to-me s211 E500.

The car is a 2005 (first registered 2 Sept 2005) s211 E500 estate with the 722.9 7G tonic transmission, 103,000 miles, full history.

When running in gear, between about 1,700rpm and 2,200rpm, under light load, there is a curious judder from the driveline. It feels almost like a misfire. The rev counter flickers slightly. Please could you help ascertain the cause.

The only relevant code is "TCM - Transmission Control Module, 2214 Check Component Y3/8s1 (Selector Range sensor(VGS))."

The TCM was rebuilt (bad speed sensors) a couple of months before I bought the car and the transmission serviced.

When in "neutral" or "park", the engine revs cleanly. Engine performance seems to me fine (I have a r129 SL500 with the same engine for comparison).

The symptom does not appear to be shift related. With one exception, the car selects gears cleanly and smoothly. The symptom manifests itself if I lock the transmission in gear and maintain a steady speed. The exception is the shift from third to second at low speed, sometimes this is a little bit lumpy.

It may well be unrelated, but sometimes the car is very slow to start or needs to attempts to start. I believe the fuel filter may need replacing and there is no record of this ever having been done. It looks a somewhat involved job. I don't think fuel starvation can be an issue here, though as the car pulls like a train under heavy load. The symptom manifests itself only under light load.

As always, thank you in advance for any assistance.

So these faults existed when you bought the car ?

No. The symptoms manifested themselves a couple of days ago.
I was angling is there anyway you could get the seller to sort it under warranty ?
Would it be worth an hour at an MB specialist to get an idea of what might be the problem .

How long ago was the transmission work done, it may still have some sort of warranty on it.

Thanks both. It is booked in with my local specialist early in the new year but I always like to have a good understanding of the issue. Plus I want to use it for a road trip. Not a great time of year for car trouble.

It was a private purchase and I’ve no gripes whatsoever with the seller. Just one of those things.

Further googling suggests torque converter lock up issues.

Sounds like a torque converter problem to me. There used to be issues with coolant entering the transmission via the cooler built into the radiator. Would result in torque converter judder
