c320 cdi
Hello all! This is my first post and hopefully you all can give me some good advice. I am thinking of buying a c320 cdi and probably would have put a deposite on it the other day but whilst out on a test run the car would not exccelerate properly when I drove it but it did boost very well when the salesman drove it? Anyway he had it in the workshop and has rang me to say it was the egr valve sticking and that he will be putting a new valve and the car will sorted, should I let this put me off buying the car or are these cars normally as solid as a rock? It has done 44k one owner from new, spotless and has full MB service history.
Thanks and any help will be much appreciated

Greg

These things happen, as with all cars things go wrong. With full MBSH it should be a good car, but at the end of the day it's what you feel happy with. Maybe take another test drive after it's been rectified and see how it performs.

Oops! Forgot to say hello and welcome.

Bet it's the inlet port shut off motor fault. Potentially the car could need a new manifold. Not now but it will in the future. Avoid.

Thanks Mike that's what I was going to do, take it for about a half hour **** drive and see how the car performs, he also said he will show me receipts of the new valves. Hopefully it will be sorted and Il be in my new Merc next week.

Hi Steve, I have read about this inlet manifold problem, is it a common fault on these and do you think this could be the start of the manifold problem?

Thanks
Greg

never mind what stevie says - look through his posts and you will see he's got a hatred for any car that he hasnt already owned or currently owns. Dont even mention the 7g gearbox! (I know you had a e320 so pipe down).
As stated these things happen, yes they do suffer an inlet port shut off motor now and again but at £150 for the part its not the end of the world. Merc revised the seal on the turbo to stop the oil seeping out and dripping onto the shut off motor so hopefully its been resolved. I haven't seen many manifolds been done on these engines - on the other hand the 5 pot C270 is a different story!
The V6 320 is pretty much a bomb proof engine, take it a run once its sorted and you will love the grunt. So smooth and quiet for a Diesel... hope you enjoy.:thumb:

Bomb proof with bearings going pop, leaking turbos, blocked manifolds and manifolds breaking up and ending in the turbo. Aye bomb proof indeed mate...

Wow! Very confused now, I know with all cars you will at some point have a few problems, things wear out that's just life, but what I don't want to do is spend 10k on a car that is at the start of a load of disasters. With the egr valve needing to be replaced now, is this the start of other valves needing to be replaced? Is this how these normally start? If the the pgf valve goes your talking more Like 1500 to replace manifolds aren't you?

Bottom line is it's a £10k that was, depending on spec, maybe up to £40K or more new and it's now seven years old. You will, at some point in your ownership, get some additional running costs.

If you want total peace of mind for £10K then buy a new car with a manufacturers warranty but the I'm guessing you don't really fancy a Kia Picanto. :dk:

There's no denying Steve had a heap of trouble with his, others have experienced the opposite. Buying older cars that had a high initial purchase price is a bit of a gamble, all you can do is assess the car on the facts presented and how much you trust the person selling it.

True Matt it is 7 tread old but as with bmw, VW and Mercedes I thought they were all ment to be the dogs. I gave just sold my mk5 R32 which I had for 2 years and only had to replace the too mounts in that time. The wife drives a KIA Picanto so your wright I don't want one of those. I like sporty cars something that will put a smile on my face but still want something that is still reliable. Just a little worried about the Merc and is the start of more problems to come.
