Last weekend my W211 E280 CDi (OM642) was within touching distance of 200k miles. I decided to treat it to a bit of a 'birthday' before it crossed over the 200k mark.
I tackled the minor oil cooler leak, I thoroughly cleaned the intake manifolds and head intake ports and EGR system. Unfortuately I broke off one of the swirl flap actuator arms, so after resigning to the fact I couldn't repair it without shedding out for a new manifold, I jammed them in the open position and fitted a new actuator to keep the ecu happy. The engine got all new filters, oil and coolant.
I also changed the 7G gearbox fluid (twice as I had no TC drain plug) and rear diff oil.
All front suspension ball joints and bushes were replaced the week before.
On Monday and Tuesday I drove my regular run. Monday I gave it a right good spirited drive to clear out any remaining soot deposits I may have missed. On Tuesday I aimed for effiency, not crazy efficiency, 65 to 70mph on motorway, A and B roads and light footed planning ahead etc. 49 mpg over 51 miles. I had struggled to get it to touch 40 mpg in the past. These were indicated dashboard figures. A near 2T estate car with a 3.0 V6 engine and a lazy torque converter auto box... 49MPG!!! Amazing.
I just wish I hadn't done all the work at the one time. I would maybe liked to have seen which of the different elements gave the biggest improvement. But maybe it was a combination of them all. Anyway, I'm happy.
I didn't do this work to improve mpg, it was done as preventative maintenance to preserve the life of the car. A nice bonus nonetheless.
A couple of rust spots to tend to next and I think I'll aim for the 300k mark now.
