All,

I’m considering a first Mercedes and need advice on reliability, and maintenance costs.

What I want;
A car that is fuel economical, needs tyres and just a service. That’s all. It’s either this Merc or a Volkswagen CC 2.0 TDi. I’m coming from a Jaguar XJ8 and I can’t be bothered with fixing it.

What things do I need to ask any potential seller?

That looks nice - don't see many in white

I would be asking about history (was it used for hire being white) though a Car Vertical check would be worth it.

Service History inc ATF change?
Electrics all work?
All the usual mechanical hotspots for all cars
No modifications not declared (exhaust, emissions, a remap etc)?
Tyres good enough?
Sat nav Upto date?

Others may chip on specific and frequent mech issues

If this is what you are looking for then I would say go for the VW, it's going to be cheaper to run and repair.

The E-class you shared is 11 years old, and expecting it will only need tires and a service will cause you frustration when something breaks 6/12 months after acquiring it.

Yeah 11 years old you will need some funds for ongoing maintenance / breakdowns

If the piece in bold really is your requirement and you are looking at 10 yr old cars then you need a Toyota or Honda petrol car.
A 10 yr old e class mercedes will be nicer to drive but will definitely need something fixing every year.

As above...

Well yes, there is that option to get a more sensible car as well.....

That's not an un-sensible Mercedes though

Is the advertised Merc diesel an Adblue model?

@Kudly no it's a BlueEfficiency Euro 5 example.
