Hi everyone

Sorry for any potential double post BUT I can't, for the life of me, find an equaliser setting suggestion. I've spent so much time looking in here and on Google but all I can see is replacement speaker suggestions and how the upgraded burmester system isn't quality for what you pay for. But no suggestions for if you decide to keep it, to optamise the sound.

I know music is very personal but I'd like a middle ground to start off with and what any of you may have deemed as your perfect set up in terms of bass, mid tones, and treble.

I have a lovely home surround sound system with an svs SB 2000 Sub so I'm no beginner to sound, but would love some feedback.

I've seen some. You tube videos but they're all over the place. Eg some say you need to go 7 7 7 whilst others say sub at 3 with the others at 6.

Thoughts before I collect my car in 24 hours?

I would change it yourself and see what you like.

I prefer a U shape graphic as I don't like a lot of midrange, I want to feel the bass giving me a back massage and enough top end so it's not drowned out by anything.

What I found after I set this was the Burmester system is utterly lacking in many departments because it is shyte.

Upgrading and replacing with quality components from the AGW onwards is the only way!

When I had the audio upgrade done by www.comandonline.co.uk, they offered an optional pre-amp, but I decided to go with COMAND and speakers upgrade only (4 x Morel and 1 x Alpine subwoofer).

The result is awesome, my assessment is that tne speakers are the weak point, not COMAND.

Obviously equaliser/pre-amp will improve the audio further, but I would start with the speakers and take it from there.

I'll try 7 - 3 - 7 and see how it goes. I've splurged a ton of money lately so upgrading the speakers atm isn't on my top list but it's good to know there are options.

Unfortunately with me, I've never done wiring of any sort so it's not something I'd be able to do, making a change more expensive but I'm more than happy to save here and there for a near future upgrade if need be 😊

A word of advice: do it now (budget permitting, obviously).

I upgraded my W203 after having the car for 4 years, I sat on the fence for that long..... It cost the same, but I had less years to enjoy my investment.

When I bought the W204, I decided that I either upgrade it shortly after buying it, or not at all.

So back in 2017 I let Comand UK loose on the car :) and I have been enjoying the result for three years now :thumb:

I've been quoted 1800 to change the front door speakers and the 2 sub woofers in the car. Just seems like a whole lot of money. The unfortunate part of car speakers vs home audio is not really being able to test it out to see the differences before going all out and agreeing to the swaps.

I've had my car with Burmeister since the end of July and have to say that i'm pretty disappointed in the sound quality.

I came from Audi (last 2 cars) the most recent having Bose and the one before B&O, got to say that of the 3, the Burmeister is the worst and B&O at the top by a country mile. I found that the B&O needed very little in the way of adjustment to make it sound amazing (in fact, it didn't have any form of equaliser or tonal adjustment to speak of) , the Bose was a little too bass heavy but more than liveable once fettled with.

It maybe that because I haven't spent that long in this car 'because Covid', I need to fiddle with the EQ some more until i'm happy - i'm optimistic i'll get it to sound passable....

There is nothing you can do to optimise the sound of the lousy Burmister system in the W205 Saloon without replacing components....the speakers in the car are way too small, are of inferior quality and badly placed.

There are kits by a company called Match re speaker replacement which are not too expensive.. Not sure how they sound but anything has to be better that what is in there at the moment. I will be giving these speakers a go when I get around to it. I am also toying with the idea of fitting the under the seat Kenwood bass speaker /amp which again is not too expensive.

Personally I cannot live with the Burmister as it currently sounds but I also don't want to spend silly money on upgrades.

Good suggestion. I have never been impressed with the sound system and would be upset had I paid the £800 for it as an option. I wanted the Premium Plus package for the panoramic sunroof and the Sound system came with the package among with other bits. The package was £800 less than the parts as options so the sound upgrade came “ free” using man maths.
Tried it in my s205 this morning. Made an improvement after trying other settings over the last 4 years. Like the improvement and like the cost!

I waited a little while after I bought my car as it was quite pricey (by my standards) just to recover but...

... I did the same here. My reasons were slightly different - I didn't really want to spend the money on the sounds in my AMG as I usually had the music set lower with the windows and sunroof all open so I could listen to the V8 soundtrack all the time. So wouldn't have been value for money and the stock AMG speakers were decent (HK speakers I believe just without the HK amp) and so I installed a subwoofer. That took me a whole weekend to do it properly and I still had to do a bit more to the sub mount I made.

Then I bought a CL but I knew very quickly, perhaps after 6 months, that the novelty for me was going to wear off very quickly and my suspicions came true after a couple of years of it. I did toy with the idea of upgrading on it but dithered once the doubts set in so I knew I wouldn't be making that mistake on the next car!

Then I bought my S500 and I was going to have a stab at it myself. However, whilst I am sure I could have done it, I'm Freddie Flintoff-shaped (tall and heavy) and where I used to gut and do ICE installs in many of my early cars in my 20s (transferring the same kit usually), nowadays I can't access and contort myself in ways required to access all the speaker locations. Not only that, I knew if I installed a sub that the speakers in the stock system are shyte so I would HAVE to replace those as well and amplify the whole lot properly.

Then it's know-how how to take things apart and accessing different speakers, wiring diagrams to tap in and running new cables, ensuring things are put back correctly and things like air bags are not interfered with.

Then it's time - if you work you perhaps don't want to spend hours of your time titting around.

So I decided to just get it done by a firm who do this sort of thing all the time and have the know-how which I am missing as it was 2003 I last did a full install, and from the AMG I knew, things have moved on.

So I involved COMAND after much research and 6 months later in Summer 2019. Richard and the two installers were immensely helpful and did a great job. Many a time we farted around with something else that needed doing but they did an honest job and Richard is immensely knowledgeable.

I wanted the upgraded sound system at the start so I would get the maximum enjoyment out of it and I knew I would be keeping my car for a long time all being well.

I didn't buy an AMG because I no longer trust myself and so I spent a fair few quid on the install knowing that I would be saving in running costs and not buying an AMG...

It took me a while to tune it how I wanted it as I have a very specific sound I like but once I got there - every time I use the car I play my own music and it sounds great.

Being an S500 it has double-glazing, a super-smooth ride and amazing build quality and so the experience is amazing.

So I would say get it done when you can do it...

Great advice and seems like you're happy with where you are atm with the sound. I think I'm going to be in bliss for a little while. It would be so much easier if there was a finance option with Comand Online. I'd prolly get it booked ASAP so maybe its good that there are no finance options 😂 I'd be making upgrades all over, leaving me broke.

Are there two levels of Burmester hifi in the S/W205 options list?
