I gained a steering squeek on my way to work the other day, a sort of rubbery squeek that is just there throughout the wheel rotation but most noticeable at the start of movement or if you rock the wheel from side to side.

Jacked the car up when I got home - squeek is still there with the engine off and wheels off the ground and can be heard just as well from outside when pulling on the front wheels to rotate the steering (either side). Difficult to tell of course but I think the squeek is coming from the steering box/damper area rather than the wheels/suspension (just as loud, whichever side of the car you are on).

I did drop the under dash cover and lubricate the bulkhead grommet with a bit of light grease but no change.

Idea's please.

No real ideas but my W202 has what seems the same problem, and has done for quite some time. I only notice it at very slow speeds. I asked a Merc specialist about it a couple of months ago and he sprayed some WD40 somewhere down below - at the end of the steering column I think. That seemed to help for a while but recently it returned, so like you I would be interested in suggestions from anyone else.

Always hard when doing this single handed. By spraying all the moving parts with PTFE will show if the problem is a rubber bush, if you did this and the squeak is still there, then it could be the swivels dry and in need of replacement

Though not roll bar bushes in this case it works well when these start to sqeak

It is most likely to be the rubber grommet at the bottom of the column causing the noise. I suggest lubricating it again.
