I am getting tired of "convenience features not available, battery protection" each time I use my car (1 week intervals mostly).

What's the best battery and where's the best place to get it?

Recently changed the S211's convenience battery and IIRC it was about £50 from the dealer.

Slightly OT, didn't you end up selling the CLS55?

Given that's only a back up if the main battery fails on the 211/219 why do you think it will solve the problem?

I couldn't bear to sell it, and replacements did not make me smile broadly so am keeping for 1 more year :)

I always thought the error message was caused by the smaller battery.

get from mb dealer
£60-70 with a discount and batteries are covered for 3 years

As I understand it the front one on these cars is literally an emergency battery if the back one is flat so you can still start the car and the message is because the back one is down a bit. If it just sits around all week and is as cold as it has been that's why you get it, you just need to trickle charge it.

On other cars like, I believe, the SL, the smaller one has other duties but not on ours.

As above, main battery related in W211. But check first are you having a drain current which empties you battery, or is the battery just bad and cannot take charge (worth to measure charge voltage too).

it's seems to be more of an issue in cold weather .. but message goes away in a few minutes

perhaps I should get a new main battery ...

Changed my main battery because of the constant "consumer off" message. Dealer price including fitting was very competitive and obviously you get the correct part!

Assume you're saying that cured it for good?

On my W211 it was the main battery.

The convenience functions message just indicates that the car is shutting down stuff to save power because it's not happy with the voltage of the main battery. It typically goes away after the engine has run for a short while. Happens in cold weather or if you leave somethign on for a while - eg. door left open for a while and courtesy light on.

The car may also run a slightly faster idle to raise the voltage.

new main battery fitted on Sat .. lots of error codes cleared (none of which re appeared after new battery). Old battery was over 7 years old.

car feels more spritely .. I may of course be dreaming it!

front parktronic sensor also replaced so no more beeping fits.

ALL is well in CLS55 land .. just like it should be :)

Funny you should say that but I had my battery out the other week just to top it right up and I thought much the same but just put it down to old age.

If I drive mine twice a week i don't get the message at all but if it's a whole week it comes on for just over a quarter of a mile.

Wish Aldi or Lidl would hurry up and get their diddy chargers back in, the trickle charger I've got on my bike won't cope with the big battery in the car and i have a decent but large charger so don't want to spend £60 on a ctek just to keep it topped up.

good to know it's not just me :)

I do think that a new battery improves the car as all electronics are able to run with the right voltage and current instead of less, which can cause errors (and there were lots!) and performance issues

My car now seems to be fully awake as opposed to being in a permanent semi twilight zone; much like that which I am in when I have just woken up ..

I thought the same - and put it down to the system resetting the internal calibration on the accelerator pedal potentiometer after the power was cut.

Strangely, I am replacing my battery this week as my clock has been off for a good 6 weeks now, but after a week of no use, my parking sensors decided to give up and not work at all and now I am wondering 'how long' before it gives up altogether. The sensors had periodically just given up and beeped for no reason prior to that.

Not to mention the permanent 'convenience' message you were getting.

I've already replaced the smaller battery as that was fooked - and my main battery is a 2008 one.

I'm hoping a new battery will have the same effect.

Can you do this without cutting power?

There is the published W211 procedure to reset transmission adaptation using the ignition key position and the accelerator pedal. My recollection is that it has been mentioned that this procedure in fact has nothing to do with the transmission - but actually resets the accelerator calibration.

Ahhhh - I remember this. Thanks
