Is it just me or is it that every Mercedes at least that i see on the road seems to have a 220cdi engine.
I dont know anything about the 220 having owned a 320 CLS 300 TD E class 230K SLK 280 SLK and currently in a 270 CDI CLK are they any good just seems a bit to small capacity for a oil burner to me ?

I have the 250cdi Eclass estate S212 2012 same motor but just a little higher tune, and its just fab. Every bit as fast as my old 320cdi IL6 Eclass estate and better on fuel. Got 57.7 mpg at french motorway speeds last week.

I just love it. It pulls like a train and once on the move is almost silent

220cdi is the weaker brother of 250cdi. Both straight 4s. Small compared to 6ers but powerfull enough to be the most desired taxi engine. Low fuel consumption, enough power, durable, what’s not to like. Maybe not the best choice for towing.

Part of the reason is that MB were/are flooding the market with lease/PCP/etc deals and the 220CDi in both the C and E made for great consumer value with the halo prestige.

The W205 and W213 are perfectly adequate in the 220 guise for the majority of owners. The 250 is just a little brisker (do not think that the 250 is available in the W213) No idea over the 0-62 or torque/bhp - just my impressions of how they drive on the motorway.

In fact I am begrudgingly thinking of considering an E220Cdi but am resisting with the lure of a 2/3 year old CLS350Cdi for my 25K miles/annum. Like many posters have an E250CDi W212 (square headlights) and it is just fantastic therefore am really struggling to part with it even with nigh on 200K miles on it.

Looks out the window.... nope not a E220 diesel :). However they are the sweet spot combination of performance/road tax/economy/cost for most people. Plus I was in two E220 Cdi taxi (s212) with over 1/4 million miles this week and they both seemed to be running incredibly well.

My 2008 S204 C220 has more than enough grunt for most if not all every day driving, surprises many when I floor it but returns at least 45mpg on everyday runs and better than that on long runs. I think it would give my 968 cab a run for it's money except on twisty bits where the 968's phenomenal road holding would give it the edge.

Fantastic motor and more than enough grunt when on the turbo to keep up with most middle range “hot” hatches. Plus I can’t get less than 45 mpg whatever I do.

I have taken three E220's to over 300k miles each, and a C220 to 170k miles, my current E220 is still going well at 302k. Never had a single engine issue, all averaged 47-49mpg overall, needed no oil between servicing and no cambelts to change.

Performance wise they won't set the world alight but they are more than adequate in normal driving conditions and cruise all day at 80 without a murmur so what's not to like apart from the fact Mercedes also have the 350CDi.

W213 E220 is a new engine to the 220/250.

Now only a 2.0L but running 190hp with a 9 speed box. More power and better economy than the 220/250.

W212 200cdi bf 136bhp
W212 220cdi bf 170bhp
W212 250cdi bf 204bhp
W212 350cdi bf 231bhp

Have a W212 E Class 220 Estate AMG Sport - Great motor, quick enough for most occasions 40mpg local knocking about, and 54mpg today from Wales on the A55 M56 M6 I thought about the E350 but didn't need the extra performance for the extra expense.

I rarely see a BMW 3 series with anything but 320d stuck on the back, or an Audi A4 that hasn't got 2.0tdi on the back .

Yep because they are commuter cars, for high motorway miles. No point throwing money away when you get next to no benefit having a bigger petrol engine on a long boring motorway run. You want max MPG, and comfort.

For a weekend car obviously a fat V8 lump would be lovely :p

To many people a 2.2 litre engine is probably considered pretty big. Certainly seems to be the engine of choice when you look around at relatively modern Mercs out on the road.

Only one that surprised me was seeing a newer shape CLS come past me in traffic the other week with 220 on the back.

For some reason l, in my mind that just didn’t work for me. I suppose I’ve always considered the CLS the big, luxury model that always came with an engine to match. Like the S Class in that sense.

I guess people might want luxury but not 600 quid a year tax
