does it really matter?

the alloy wheels look the same

You'll probably find you have staggered rims and therefore a wider tyre on the rear.
Check the size of your front and rear alloy (should be stamped on the inside spoke) and if they are different, don't try and stretch a 225 over the rears.

What AMGeed said. You'll probably find the tyres are directional too, meaning you've actually got 4 different tyres on the car. And if you've got a spare, that'll be different as well. The only thing they'll share is the diameter (17').

Cheers,

Gaz

There will be a slight stretch on the rears, but what is the point? I have found 245/40s to be cheaper than 225/45s in the past, for the same tyre.

What's the point of fitting the correct size tyres?? They are one of the most safety-critical parts on a car, that's why. If you're happy to skimp on them, good luck.

Just checked with quikfit and £80 pair more for 245s Continental Sport 5
Other thing is I'm not sure they were original
245s create more drag/ less economical and don't perform as well in the wet (according to the spec)

Stop talking crap. 245 will be the correct size for your car. In terms of drag and economy , there is no difference.

Why the hell would you want to do this????? They are that size for a reason. I can't understand people that fcuk about with tyres and brakes, these are the most safety critical components on a car. People buy a prestige car and then want to skimp on tyres and risk theirs and any passengers lives for the sake of forty odd quid a corner, madness !!!!!!

Stick to what should be on there. The tyre is the only thing stopping you from crashing: it's the only part of the car in contact with the road surface. It is the single most important part of any car. Anything else is relative.

And for the sake of other road users, please don't put them in danger too.

A couple of points:

Firstly. Kwik-Fit are rarely the most competitive for tyres so shop around and secondly, how o you know what size the wheel are just by looking?

As has been said, look inside the rear wheel and the size (i.e., width) should be marked, usually as a figure followed by a letter i.e. 8.5J which means the wheel is 8.5 inches or 215mm.There will be recommended series of tyre sizes for rim widths.

Your car may have a staggered set up fitted from the factory and you may find front and rear wheels are different as above. Do not guess, either look in your handbook or find a local tyre seller that does know what they are doing.
